Hawkeyes Fall in Big Ten Opener at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In a pitcher’s duel that featured 23 total strikeouts, the University of Iowa baseball team came up short, 3-2, in the Big Ten Conference opener at Indiana at Bart Kaufman Field.

The Hawkeyes fought back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Hoosiers won via a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the inning.

Senior starter Cole McDonald had his best pitching performance of the season. McDonald’s career day started in the first inning when he struck out the side after allowing the leadoff man to reach.

In seven innings of work, the New Hampton, Iowa, native recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts, which tied junior starting pitcher Grant Judkins for the most in a game this season. McDonald recorded a strikeout in every inning, sat down seven Indiana batters looking, and retired the final seven Hoosiers he faced.

McDonald’s first blemish came in the second inning when Cole Barr -- the Big Ten’s leader in home runs -- hit a solo home run to right field that carried over the fence with the help of the wind. Indiana added another run in the fifth and led 2-0 from the fifth inning to the ninth.

Indiana’s starting pitcher Pauly Milto was just as good, going 8 1/3 innings and finishing with 10 strikeouts. Milto stifled Iowa’s offense for most of the night, but the Hawkeyes forced Indiana to go to the bullpen in the ninth inning after the bases were loaded.

Senior Mitchell Boe and junior Ben Norman had back-to-back singles, and sophomore Izaya Fullard reached on a hit-by-pitch. Boe then scored on a wild pitch and Norman tied the game on a sacrifice fly from junior Austin Martin.

Iowa couldn't do any more damage as junior Grant Judkins and senior Tanner Wetrich couldn’t drive in the go-ahead run.

Redshirt junior Grant Leonard came in for the ninth to preserve the tie. After retiring the leadoff man, Leonard issued a one-out walk to Barr who came around to score from second with two outs on a walk-off infield single by Logan Kaletha.

Boe slid to make the diving play in short right field, but didn’t have enough time to get the out at first base or at the plate.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It was a tough one to swallow. Our guys showed a lot of fight. It was intense, like a Friday night game should be. We had a tremendous start out of Cole McDonald. He pitched fantastic tonight, which was good to see as we head into the Big Ten.

"It's tough, especially when you get walked-off, it's no fun. Tip your hat, Indiana played well. They’re a good team. Pauly Milto pitched well tonight. We didn’t have an answer for him. It’s one of those tough games, but just wipe it away, get up tomorrow, and do it again.”

OF NOTE…

  • With two singles in the first and fourth inning, Martin registered his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the season. It’s the third time this season Martin has registered back-to-back multi-hit games.
  • Freshman Drew Irvine pitched a scoreless eighth inning, improving his ERA to 1.35 over 6 2/3 innings.
  • Five of McDonald’s strikeouts came against the top four hitters of Indiana’s lineup.

Iowa Drops Game 2 at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Iowa baseball team had no answer for Indiana starting pitcher Tanner Gordon and dropped game two of the series, 13-1, at Bart Kaufman Field.

Gordon followed up yesterday’s pitching duel with a seven-inning, 12-strikeout performance that kept the Hawkeyes off balance all game. After Trenton Wallace’s single in the second, Iowa didn’t have a baserunner until junior Ben Norman hit a solo home run over the right field fence in the seventh inning.

Gordon retired 14 consecutive batters in that span and the Hawkeye offense was retired in order six times.

Starter Cam Baumann had a clean first inning but was bounced from the game after 2 1/3 innings. The sophomore left-hander allowed four runs on four hits and four walks.

Indiana finished with 13 hits and seven walks against five Hawkeye hurlers. Junior Adam Ketelsen, who entered in the seventh inning, was the bright spot for the Hawkeyes out of the bullpen. The Mount Vernon, Iowa, native gave up a double to the first batter he faced, but retired the next six batters, five of which went down on strikeouts.

The Iowa offense mustered five total hits. Sophomore Trenton Wallace had two of them, while two more came in the ninth inning off the bats of sophomore Brett McCleary and junior Luke Farley, who both entered as late-game substitutions.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“We didn’t have a good day on the mound. We didn’t have a good day offensively, which is a bad combination. The only positive was that I thought Adam Ketelsen looked good in his two innings of work at the end of the game.

“Indiana had a good day. (Tanner) Gordon did a nice job. He was able to keep us off the barrel early in the count and put us away. Once he got to two strikeouts, he punched out a lot of guys.

“I’d like to see us bounce back with a lot more energy and a lot more fight than we showed today. I feel good about having Grant Judkins on the mound. We’ll regroup. Days like this happen, unfortunately. We need to be a littler bit tougher than we were today, and I think we will be.”

OF NOTE…

• It is only the third time in Heller’s six years at the helm that Iowa has lost a game by 10 or more runs. Iowa’s last double-digit defeat came last season at the hands of No. 23 UNLV by a score of 13-3.

UP NEXT

The series finale is scheduled for tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. (CT). Junior Grant Judkins (2-1, 1.52 ERA) will start on the mound against Indiana’s Andrew Saalfrank (1-1, 2.93 ERA).

Hawkeyes Swept by Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its third and final game of its Big Ten opening series to Indiana, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field.

Junior Grant Judkins (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs — two earned – on five hits and two walks. The right-handed pitcher struck out four batters, but junior Lorenzo Elion’s error at third base in the second inning proved costly.

Grant Richardson homered to left three batters later, scoring Ryan Fineman who reached on the error.

Iowa was able to get 11 runners on base with two outs, but only scored once off a double by sophomore Trenton Wallace in the third.

Indiana added runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 4-1 after five innings before tacking on three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Hawkeyes had nine hits -- the most in any game of the series -- spread throughout the batting order, but Iowa only had multiple hits in two innings.

Base running miscues hurt the Hawkeyes early as senior Mitchell Boe was picked off first base in the first, Elion was picked off second base in the second, and senior Chris Whelan was hosed trying to steal second.

Justin Jenkins (2-for-3), Austin Martin (1-for-2), and Trenton Wallace (1-for-3) all reached base three times.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It was a tough weekend and it was a tough day again today. We were better, but squandered opportunities early. We ran ourselves out of some innings when they were giving us freebies. Grant Judkins gave us a quality start. Unfortunately, if you look at the scoreboard it’s the story of the weekend; nine hits to nine hits, but they hit the two big home runs to give them the lead.

“We aren’t driving the ball. We’re not in a great place. Some of the guys that need to carry us and come through with runners in scoring position are in a funk right now. We have to get out of here and go home. We have a nine-game home stand and hopefully we can get some things fixed this week before we face Illinois next weekend.”

OF NOTE…

  • The Hawkeyes never led all series.
  • It was the first time Iowa was swept in a Big Ten three-game series since May 9-11, 2014, against Illinois.
  • Judkins has recorded three quality starts this season, including two straight. He has allowed three earned runs or less in all six of his starts.
