Howe: These Hawkeyes Not Ready for Primetime

Iowa offense missing in action for second week in a row:

The inability to run the ball cannot be overstated enough, as well as the ripple effect it causes.

The defense is hanging in there best they can, but will not be a vintage Iowa defense unless they are turnovers.

Special teams have been spotty. Kicking game has been good, return game not so much. Way too many drives starting inside the twenty.

All three have to be clicking in unison for Kirkball to work. And right now its not hitting on all cylinders.

Iowa's offense should get some relief next week against Purdue, but then Northwestern and Wisconsin are up.

I know we are a run 1st, play action offense. If this is the case, shouldnt the O line be something that the coaches work with constantly? to develop?

Where are the studs we are used to getting? Did we not recruit any guards the last few years? Or are we not developing players like we have in the past?

Why is the defense consistently good and the offense consistently average (at best)? I cant imagine we got that much better of athletes on the defensive side than the offensive side.

If we are not ready for prime with a 3rd year starting QB and a 3rd year OC, will we ever be?

It is a shame, because if Iowa had even an average offense they would be 6-0. Despite how bad Iowa has looked on offense (and it has been baaad) Iowa is only 1 score away from Michigan and Penn St at the end of the day. Also a shame because these blue-bloods are also has-been blue bloods and Iowa needs to beat them when they are not at full power. Michigan will probably be a 8-4/7-5 team when it is all said and done. Penn St will be better than that that and they are good, but not great.

Missed opportunities yet again for this program. But, if you can't score, you can't win. Iowa has a Rose Bowl defense with a Motor City Bowl offense. Margin for error is gone and more losses are coming.

can't say i disagree with anything rob stated. our offense is currently in some serious trouble. i saw a quote from wirfs that was pretty much laced with frustration and defeat. that's two games in a row our OL's have interviewed and sounded completely disheartened and without hope. now, does that change during the course of a week of game prep? sure. but, after awhile, everyone realizes that "it is what it is" and reality sets in. an uphill battle for iowa's offense, indeed.

The shocking part for me was how bad the offensive line play was, especially the interior line. We have a pro-style QB and if he can't get the protection up front then the offense won't be successful. Of all the years to have a shitty offensive line, this team should be competing for the B10 title and have a perfect record.

On the flip side, Brandon Smith probably made one of the best catches I've ever seen in a Hawkeye uniform. That touchdown catch was AMAZING!

I was just imagining the film study in opposing teams offices when getting ready for Iowa. I bet there is a lot of laughter and amazed looks at the stupidity of the play calling.

Don’t forget about Jon Miller. Never critical of the program despite a platform to do so. However, no need to do so when the website is getting clicks.

I think it's inaccurate to say that Jon is NEVER critical of the program. Maybe it would be better to say he's not critical enough for your liking. Maybe I'm not either. And that's fine. We all have different levels of frustration.

Rob, being in press conferences, player/coach interviews and otherwise more aware of what is going on in the football building than us average joes,do you get the sense of any urgency in the coaching staff about the offense, or is it just keep plugging away, doing the same thing?

Thank you.

Wanted to mention it was a great crowd last night. Stadium was rocking. Stanzi was a great pick for honorary captain. Seeing the ‘09 team back together was cool. Carson King was recognized again. Gabby Yoder did a great job as kid captain. Wonderful atmosphere again at Kinnick.
A wasted opportunity. Hard to get the passing interest Hawk fan back in the stadium with that performance last night.

Rob I was at the game as well and I thought the stripes looked great as always (been to several of these stripe themed games in person). Fans showed up and Kinnick was full. And, yes I thought it got loud at times (3rd downs). But, I thought it was one of the more subdued night games that I can remember at Kinnick. But, I suppose, 12 points of offense will do that...even if you pull out all of the event stops (fly overs, fireworks, Stanzi, etc). The ABC stoppage in play probably did not help. Seemed like a resigned feel throughout the stadium.
