How did Indiana get to where Iowa wants to be

As stated several times above, no one is saying Cig is lucky. He earned that Nattie. The luck is Indiana. They did not F'ing know Cig would do what he did. They hired a coach with a good resume, but it wasn't a resume that was any better than the dozens of qualified coaches that come up from the lower ranks every year. Indiana was lucky.

I disagree that KF has been just "good" at Iowa. Given the resources, location, history, facilities, etc., KF has been great. He has punched above Iowa's weight class. Is he elite? No. Is he at Cig's level? Of course not. But, when KF hangs them up, our odds of replacing him with a Cig are about 1%. Our odds of hiring the next Scott Frost from the lower levels is probably 50% or better. The odds are actually pretty good that the next coach after KF will win less games. That's just a hard truth.

So yes, Iowa could have fired KF in the last 5 years and looked for a Cig like Nebbie has been doing for two generations now. Maybe Iowa could strike gold and find the next great coach. It won't, but it can try. But, you also might turn a Top 20 program into a national joke like our neighbor to the West.

Difference is Cig wont last 5 seasons there and will be swooped up. No one in the BIG10 will ever stay as long as KF did with Iowa. He had chances to go pro and was loyal to the Hawks i give him credit for that above everything else. He's not sexy I know Iowa people wanted/want a sexy coach (STOOPS type)...but damn that constancy is underrated.

Agree and disagree. I agree that no one will ever have the tenure in the Big 10 that KF has had. Not in modern football. He was in the right place in that Iowa is notoriously patient and loyal to its coaches, plus he was just good enough to be successful and keep his job year and year out, but not so elite that a blue blood or NFL team backed up a Brinks Truck.

I disagree Cig is going anywhere. If he was leaving, he would have left already. He literally just turned water into wine in a way that has never been done. He cannot get any hotter than he is right now. Three reasons he aint going anywhere:

1. Indiana backed up the money truck already. It would be hard to appreciably top that money and at his age, what's another couple million do for you?
2. He is 64. That is getting up there for a new hire.
3. He has a surly personality. Probably a bit too old school for the NFL and the SEC.

Notoriously patient, loyal to coaches, yes. Now add Iowa fans are proven smart.

CIG is a big Fan of CIG !! so We'll have to see it is Bloomington Indiana
Would you rather live in a clean, peaceful college town in the middle of the country, or coach the Jets in New Jersey? Most NFL teams are in NFL cities and most cities suck. Cig can ride out his remaining years as a god in Indiana, or he can live in an concrete jungle in Texas and only be revered for as long as the last defeat is in memory. The NFL is unforgiving. Ask Harbaugh and Tomlin.

He is where he should be.

I think your "similarities" list, while pretty accurate in intent between CC and KF, is miles apart on execution.
As many already said, so much comes down to guts and timing ... two characteristics KF hasn't shown since 2015.

Also, I think CC puts much more emphasis on offense production - especially on 1st down. KF, well, that horse has been a flattened, roadkill carcass for half a generation of Hawkeye fans.
