Hecklinski great day

Here is my concern. The fans overwhelming wanted Heck to win this job even before Saturday. Now, its even more fervent. Yes, the fans only have a couple data points, but they decidedly point to Heck. Fair or not, fans perceive that Brown lost us the Indiana game, and perhaps even more daunting, he just looks and feels like DeaconMcNamaPetras. We finally have weapons and a great OL, most fans want a guy who can spin the ball.

So, if KF trots Brown out there for the first series, are there some boos?????

KF should announce game week that Heck starts, but both will rotate so that the coaches can give them an evaluation under live game action.
This is what I am thinking. From what transpired Saturday, how the heck could KF not choose to go with Heck. If he does, he'd be going against what everybody saw. He would have a lot of tough questions to answer.

My point is/was the article sort of (as I read it) implied the scrimmage set Heck apart.
As in the scrimmage alone would determine status.

Sure, if there are other data points, then yes, the scrimmage certainly added in Heck's favor.

For the one data point folks, yes, that is the company line. That said, his one relevant start at Auburn he threw three picks and was benched. He choked against Indiana. He got passed on the depth chart midseason last year. And, he played under the exact circumstances as Heck did Saturday and was wildly outclassed. We have data. It suggests Brown is a good, smart, technical QB who shines in practice, but has not been able to translate that to live action. Don't overthink this one KF. Start the gamer.

Anybody know who took the first reps last Saturday? That right there might tell you who has the slight advantage.
I thought I read that it was Brown who took the first reps with the 1s, but it was more practice than scrimmage. The reps were divided evenly. The pundits were reporting it both ways as to who had the slight advantage going in, but I was reading more Brown leans than Heck, but everyone agreed that the coaches were genuinely saying it was neck and neck. Fry argued a week back that they already know who it is, but are keeping the competition open. If that is true, then Saturday either sealed the deal or blew up the thinking.....

I would be more worried if I thought KF was making this decision. I mean, ultimately he is, but if Lester wants Heck to start, KF has got to honor that. Lester has repeatedly said he needs to make the passing game more dynamic in order for Iowa's offense to take the next steps. He's not commenting on ball security, clock control, and conservative play. He wants to get the ball in the hands of the receiving playmakers. Through that lens, the choice is obvious. I trust Lester here.

This kind of reminds me of the Christensen vs Stanzi debacle. Now, I don't think there was the competition going into the season as I think Christensen was named the starter but it was clearly evident early in the season that he didn't quite have it. It seems Ferentz had some kind of relationship with Christensen's relative going back to the NFL days or something. Not sure if that played with KF giving him a large leash for the time he did.

Fans were begging for Stanzi and KF finally caved & played him, largely due to I don't think he could really answer the questions from the media/fans anymore. He played Stanzi and the rest is history. Stanzi was a gamer and not afraid to take chances. Yes, he threw his share of pick 6's but he had this innate ability to be able to flush bad plays and make good plays right after. He was just a gamer, much like Drew Tate. Does this sound familiar to what we are hearing about Heck?

Jake Christensen will forever be one of the biggest enigma's of the KF era. Highly rated recruit who helped KF land a Top 5ish class nationally. Stats galore coming out of high school. Initially looked promising, but that kid could not hit a bull in the ass with a scoop shovel. At times it almost looked like he had the yips. I think KF stayed with him in part because he is KF, but there was some family pressure given who his dad was too.

Different times and different scenario. I truly think Lester's voice will decide the issue this year. There is no preconcieved loyalty to either of these kids. Neither has started, KF is not invested in either, so the best kid should play pretty much from the jump.

I think Christensen may have been an example of a guy who gets overrated in high school because he has a lot of good players around him and/or a scheme that fits him perfectly. He came from a powerhouse program.

Part two, of course, is also what KFz tends to do to quarterbacks; make them second-guess their instincts which undermines their confidence. Some handle it better than others.

Until the stadium is full, cameras are on, game is full speed, and the team across from them isn't wearing black or gold, nobody knows jack squat.
While this is probably overstating things a bit---cause I think we do know something about these two---I agree that neither has seen much live action at this level. So, despite my pretty strong belief that Heck should be the guy, I think both guys should get first half reps in the first game and see where things go from there. But, Heck has earned the first series, IMHO. Despite the "this is just 1 of 20" from KF, Saturday was and will be the closest these guys see to live action before NI, and one guy rose to the occasion and the other did not.

Everyone deals with pressure differently. Some thrive, others wither.

KF certainly has a checkered history with QB development in his nearly 3 decades at the helm. On the one hand, Banks damn near won the Heisman, 4 guys have been drafted although CJ is the only one who got some run, and a guy like Tate was really good in college and then up North. For the length of his tenure, that's not a ton to point to. And, we have seen a lot of guys just not develop. And he played Deacon Hill. Willingly.

I'd suggest Tate was unbreakable.

Banks had an amazing season, but he had one hell of a team around him, especially the offensive line. He rarely faced any pressure. That said, he executed perfectly.

CJ might never had started if his Dad hadn't given the ultimatum.

100% nailed it. It was baffling. I suppose in HS if a certain team is full of studs they could really make some players look really productive/good, like at QB. It was weird.

I'm dying to ask my kid if he's heard from his 3rd-on-the-depth-chart-defense-buddy has any intel.
But there's zero chance he's heard anything and not told me.

So, I really got nothing of value to contribute.

Other than don't go in the Coral Ridge Target during move-in day.

But ya gotta assess by what you seen and go with someone.
No, you can still say there’s not enough to go on yet. Which is what I think. Hellyeaski might be the next Brady or he might be the next Jacob Park. Until he goes out there with hundreds of thousands of people all hoping and waiting on him to be The Dude, there’s no way to know how it’ll go.

My honest guess is you’re going to see something in between terrible and what he did at kids day. He’s been practicing against that same defense for quite some time, and even though it’s supposed to be full speed it’s not. It’ll be different getting legit knocked around which unfortunately is gonna happen to every QB. We’ll see, I do know that.

In KF's interview after the session He was pretty adamant about taking care of the ball. He knows Heck is a gunslinger and not as conservative maybe as Brown. So, in the next 2 and a half weeks I'm guessing that they will emphasize taking care of the ball, take less risks, learn to throw it away when it's not there... with Heck. If he can sling and not be foolish and take bad chances, He'll be the man and pretty good also.

Exactly.
Watching the recorded snaps of each of the three top QBs from Saturday, Hecklinsky was clearly the best performer, Sullivan clearly the second best, and Brown trailed both. Hecklinsky passed Brown on the depth chart midseason last year -- did anyone see anything Saturday that remotely suggested Brown has now 'caught up' to Heck? Does anyone suggest that the scrimmage Saturday means nothing more than a closed practice?
Brown was staring down his receivers from the time he took every snap, which is partly why he had 3 passes knocked down. He was truly bad...there was nothing, other than knowing when to tuck and run with the ball, which indicated he deserved to start a B10 football game. Can anyone tell me that's going to change in 10 days, after he's been in the system for 1.5 years?? Please.
Even if the competition is supposedly close, Hecklinsky should be named the starter because he has 3 years to potentially start and Brown only 2. I suspect by midseason, Sullivan will be promoted to #2 and Brown will be #3 and will transfer when the season is over. Which would be a wise move for everyone involved. He was given a fair chance -- it didn't work out.
The QB 'competition' is over; Heck starts on opening day, and the Hawks never look back.

Bessinger and Fitzgerald could move up to number 3
