If the coaches were looking for separation, you can't have much better than that. They both need to be ready to play so not looking for a coronation from KF next week. And, even though it is only one practice, it is the practice that is semi live and with people in the stands. Heck should start, but Brown should get reps in the first game. Sort it out from there.

You can't throw a guy out there who can't complete 50% of his passes at Kid's Day. Just my opinion. What's he gunna do in front of 70,000 plus in the BIG 10? It almost sounds like Sullivan had the 2nd best day. Bessinger is a great young prospect and as what I have heard prob has the most natural skill at the position. Just needs to be in the program and learn offense. But, I heard he throws a really solid ball.
So true. It will work itself out. If Heck can continue on his success of kids day, this could be one of those magical years!

There’s more than one set of data points. Hecklinski moved ahead of Brown last season. It’s a trend.
I mean, I will absolutely take this over the data point of "secret closed door, no media, scrimmage where the #1 offense was virtually completely incapable against even the #2s on defense"
Cause, that absolutely turned out to be exactly what the data said.

Exactly. Not saying I'm for or against one or the other, but word out of camp from an insider podcast is that Brown had a slight lead from practice. It's tough to dismiss the scrimmage, but we don't know if Brown had a sore arm, leg, etc, or some other issue that could've surrounded the situation. The podcast did say, though, that Hecklinski is the type of guy to be 10-17 for 200 yards, 2TD's and 2 int, while Brown would be 16-17 for 16 yards. Gunslinger or Johnny Checkdown? Safe, boring guy or dangerous, dynamic guy? I do believe, according to 2 different podcasts, that Lester has the most say in the decision and Kirk just has to agree with what Lester presents to him, as this is the arrangement agreed upon when Lester was hired and Kirk really trusts Lester.

I will say though that if Brown ends up winning the job, he'd better perform. If not, the fan base will go ballistic.
I wasn't able to attend Saturday, unfortunately. But I have to admit after listening to a couple of podcasts myself, I am hoping Heck wins the job. Dochterman reportedly said that it was the best spring or fall camp performance at QB he had seen since covering the Hawkeyes. FWIW.

Here is my concern. The fans overwhelming wanted Heck to win this job even before Saturday. Now, its even more fervent. Yes, the fans only have a couple data points, but they decidedly point to Heck. Fair or not, fans perceive that Brown lost us the Indiana game, and perhaps even more daunting, he just looks and feels like DeaconMcNamaPetras. We finally have weapons and a great OL, most fans want a guy who can spin the ball.
So, if KF trots Brown out there for the first series, are there some boos?????
KF should announce game week that Heck starts, but both will rotate so that the coaches can give them an evaluation under live game action.

With regard to being "checkdown Charlie", here's my uneducated (coaching-wise) take.
Passing is statistically more risky. Turnover ratios are higher with passes than with runs. So passing needs to have a higher reward to justify the risk. If you're throwing checkdowns for no or little gain, what's the point of passing?

For the one data point folks, yes, that is the company line. That said, his one relevant start at Auburn he threw three picks and was benched. He choked against Indiana. He got passed on the depth chart midseason last year. And, he played under the exact circumstances as Heck did Saturday and was wildly outclassed. We have data. It suggests Brown is a good, smart, technical QB who shines in practice, but has not been able to translate that to live action. Don't overthink this one KF. Start the gamer.

Brown also had the advantage of one more spring practice season in Lester's system than Heck, and Heck still passed him by early October on the depth chart.
I'm even wondering if by September, the gap between 1 and 2 is bigger than between 2 and 3. Because it sounds like Sullivan is now ascending fairly quickly...

Going back to the "one data point" discussion above. There is more than one data point, IMO. Actually, Brown showed many flaws. Now, could it have been his worst day. I suppose but break down the day.
Brown completed like 9 passes for 42yrs and less than 50% completion. That is a 4.6 yrd average. Not exactly pressing the defense downfield. That is just checking down, prob from nerves. He also overthrew many balls and many were not close. That is a pattern, especially in front of a crowd. Brown at 6' 4" had 3 balls batted down at the LOS.
Heck completed a terrific % with 5 TD's. But, more importantly, he never took a sack and he never threw a pick. From what I understand he threw the ball away when he should have like on a bad snap, was making all the correct reads and throws. I have also heard that he got the ball out quick and was more more decisive. From what I understand he had a great command of the O and the offense responded to him and he moved the team down the field. Heck at 5' 10" did not have any balls knocked down.
