Hawks Vs Turtles

Not and never been an Iowa State fan. You just have trouble with objectivity
BS. Only a clown fan would call himself a hawk fan and sit in a game thread hoping the Hawks lose so he can reply to a post. You literally sat there waiting for it and it hilarious, lol. At least I like the team I root for. You just claim to root for them so you can have something to bitch about when they lose.

Once the threes stopped falling our water was shut off.

Game was there for the taking, couldn't take it.

Predicted upsets would happen this week, mentioned that I hoped Maryland wouldn't pull one of them.

Calling another!!! Northwestern will upset Michigan.

Late game monitor reviews and shot clock malfunctions are choking the life out the most exciting part of the games
Most college BB games are 2 hours long. Last night's was almot 2 1/2. All because of the reviews. Simple reviews that should take 30 seconds go on for 3-5 minutes. They need to set a time limit on these. Some of those last night were ridiculous.

There was also a huge number of fouls and Iowa started fouling at the end. When that happens in bonus it's 2-3 minutes each time.

Solution? Elam ending.

-- Start of the 4th quarter the shot clock is off and you set the target score to win which is the leading team's score plus 25. So if the score is Team A 52, Team B 48, the game ends when a team hits 77.

-- During the 4th quarter, if the offensive team is in the bonus and the defensive team commits a non-shooting foul the offensive team gets one free throw plus possession. This would stop defenses from fouling when the defense could hit the target score with a FT or two pointer but the offense could win with a 3 pointer.

That was a really odd game from Iowa's offensive perspective.
The first 10 minutes Iowa got to the rim on almost every possession. High-low action was especially effective -- the only thing that kept the Hawks from having a 5 pt lead instead of a 5 pt deficit at halftime was 5 blocks by the Terps at the rim in the first 10 minutes.
I don't know if Maryland made massive adjustments on the defensive end or what, but in the 2nd half those high-low actions completely disappeared, and in the last 3 minutes Iowa settled for 3s almost exclusively. Completely different offense at the beginning and ending of the game.
The game arguably turned on two consecutive possessions, with Stirtz defending both: first, he laid off a shooter and the guy nailed a 3pter; next possession Stirtz got up on the guy and he drove right past him for 2. Those were 5 really big points at a critical juncture midway through the 4th quarter.
There you go again, Grady. Yawn…

I'll say it again, no season ever finishes without a few clunkers. Again, first year B1G coach, first year B1G players, and even with this loss the Hawks are better than what everyone thought they'd be.

I swear to god some people just love to bitch and moan.

Fran's last few years people were pretty much gauging success on whether Iowa made the tournament or not and he was a multi-decade P6 coach. Now a year one guy comes in with a squad of players who had never set foot on a P6 court and it's a disaster to have one "bad" loss. Welp, unless they lose out or something they're going to the tourney in year one. That's all anyone can ask. And if you think this is bad, hold onto your butts because Stirtz is gone after this and it's gonna be way worse next year. Enjoy it while it lasts. This is a multi-year process, sorry to say.

The end of college games are brutal. Men's and women's.

Totally agree, the preseason goal for most fans would have been just getting to the Big Dance.
Given their individual talent level, no doubt this team has overachieved, with all credit going to the coach for that in my mind.
I've been watching Hawkeye hoops for 40 years, and I can't remember a more sterling offensive stretch of games by anyone that could match what Stirtz has done in his last 4 games...in terms of consistency and points. I suspect someone did, sometime, but I don't remember it. I'll be really curious how McC goes about trying to replace him next season.

I have been listening to and watching Iowa basketball for over 60 years. I can’t remember any player carrying the team like Stirtz has the past several games. I still hope Howard and Sage can step up and help get us to the tournament. We can still make it but I think we have to win 1 or 2 of the 5 top teams we play. As some have noted next year will be tough with the loss of Stirtz and Banks
Hopefully we can have some success in the portal

We need to overachieve and then get recruiting going. I think we have the coach that has a chance to get it done

I don't think it's going to happen without some huge get in the portal. There's going to be a serious regression next year and people need to just realize that.

Stirtz and Manyawu are 31.4 PPG, 7 REB, 6.1 AST together this year.

Sage, Combs and Howard all 3 together don't add up to that in any category.

I understand 100% a lot of it is because Stirtz is 80 % of the focus on this team, but it's still a hill too tall to think there's any combination of players currently on this team who are gonna come close. Stirtz draws constant double teams and there's no one here who's going to do that either. If Iowa is going to make a S16 in the next 3 years this is probably the only time it can happen.

He will be a huge loss, no doubt.

As far as other players, there was a stretch there where Luka Garza carried the team on his back for several games.

Ben is a smart coach, and my guess is he's been planning for Stirtz's departure for the past year. I would expect to see a solid guard get added via the portal.

I used to be all about the Elam ending but in the TBT or NIT they did it and I didn’t like it.

They just need to call intentional fouls. You don’t make a play on the ball ring them up.

I’ve thought of that before but then it’s still an interpretation thing by the refs. I like the Elam ending because there’s no grey area and teams are going to push their offense the way it should be.

I get your point, but Stirtz is a NBA 1st round draft pick. Worst case scenario, Combs steps in and gives you 12 and 4(points/assists). Where does that leave you? Stirtz makes up for not having a legit 2nd scorer…is BM counting on other dudes stepping up next year or is he counting on finding a PG in the portal?

I was also referring to the USC-Ohio State game which had a scorers table clock malfunction in additional to the usual monitor reviews. It was like getting a root canal (of which I've had two)

As for Michigan-Northwestern, the Cats were up double digits for the entire mid section of the game and still up eleven when I went to bed. Wolverines finished the game doing what a #2 ranked team does, a 38-15 run.

My guess is both.

He'll try to find at the very least a good ball-handler and leader. I'm sure he'll also expect a couple of returners to step up and carry more of the offensive load.

Have to agree next year is ominous. I think our hope is that we get into the tournament and make a little noise. May help us get some attention in the portal. In any event as difficult as it was to get in this year it will be harder next
