Hawkeyes found to be only NCAA team to have ever contacted player not yet in portal

On the positive side: vacating wins is a pretty meaningless penalty. No one cares about the official record (unless, perhaps, you are trying to get into the CF HOF?), they cannot wipe those four 2023 wins from our memory.

On the negative side: this just seems so ridiculous. This is an issue that everyone acknowledges is happening everywhere and by everyone. I guess we were just especially stupid in pulling it off, which is on KF and Budmayr.

Here is a Claude.ai summary of the entire history of NCAA penalties for tampering with a player on another team (take with a grain of salt because AI, but I'm not about to spend several hours researching this):

Programs Formally Penalized for Tampering with a Player Not Yet in the Transfer Portal

Iowa Hawkeyes
— The most prominent Power Four case to date. In November 2022, Iowa coaches — including head coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant Jon Budmayr — had a series of phone calls with Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara before he entered the transfer portal, which was a clear violation of NCAA tampering rules. Sports Illustrated Iowa self-imposed one-game suspensions for both Ferentz and Budmayr ahead of the 2024 season, and the school called it a Level II violation stemming from improper communication with a player and his family prior to him entering the portal. ESPN The case dragged on for years. On April 14, 2026 — today — the NCAA's Committee on Infractions formally ruled that Iowa committed tampering violations and upheld the vacation of team records as an appropriate penalty, with Iowa ultimately required to vacate four wins. thescore1260

Southern Utah Thunderbirds — Southern Utah football head coach DeLane Fitzgerald impermissibly contacted two student-athletes from other schools who were not yet entered in the NCAA Transfer Portal. One instance involved Fitzgerald participating in a 17-minute phone call with a student-athlete; just four days later, that athlete entered the portal and enrolled at Southern Utah. The NCAA found that Fitzgerald violated head coach responsibility rules, and that Southern Utah failed to monitor its football program. Agreed-upon penalties included one year of probation, a $5,000 fine, a two-week prohibition on all recruiting activities, and a two-year show-cause order for Fitzgerald. NCAA

Colorado Buffaloes — The University of Colorado self-reported 11 NCAA violations committed by Coach Deion Sanders and his staff, including tampering with transfer portal players. Two instances from May 2023 included Colorado hosting a postgraduate football camp where prospective transfers who had not yet entered the portal appeared and were spoken to by Colorado coaches. The NCAA imposed a two-week recruiting ban and a one-day ban on portal activity. Mike Farrell Sports

What a complete crock... So where Iowa really Fd up was self reporting and cooperating at all with it. Michigan is prancing around with a championship trophy the yr they cheated like crazy and the coaching staff all scurried off leaving to get out ahead of the posse. But yeah little ole Iowa who self reports cause dipshit Budmayr had to try playing the tampering game just like EVERY OTHER TEAM OUT THERE has to have the book thrown at them... Give me a break. F Budmayr and F the NCAA what a crock

At first I thought, oh, 3 of of these wins were non-conference wins. So that won't have a big effect on the Kirk Ferentz record for most Big Ten wins. Then I remembered the record counts both conference wins and non-conference wins while coaching for a Big Ten school.

Did we even win 4 games with him under center?? Did Michigan lose wins for sign stealing ??

I guess in hindsight Iowa was lucky he got hurt when he did. It would have been even better for everyone involved if he sat out the whole season getting healthy.

Meh.

That's just a longevity award.

Hayes, Schembechler, and Ped-terno all had WP in the 7's and KF is .597. And pedo-enabler or not, not counting Paterno's wins before '93 is some straight up bullshit. Penn State had way tougher schedules than Iowa in the same time frame.

That all time B1G wins for Ferentz thing has more contextual asterisks than a Barry Bonds biography.

Haters gonna hate.....

Also, who the hell cares? What do 4 wins in the grand scheme of things matter—especially when all the anger, screaming, and tea in China ain’t gonna change it?
Would be interested in what you might find over on Cry-fan

This is a complete joke. They KNOW it is happening all over and they choose to penalize little ole Iowa. What would happen if this were Michigan? Or Notre Dame? Or any other blue blood? I think we all know the answer to that.
The NCAA somehow manages to look more foolish every year. This is laughable.
