Has anyone heard any recent recruiting news Cayden Daughtry?

Iowa is the only official visit he has scheduled as of now. He said he may take up to 10 though. One problem is that Iowa is in on another 4-star point guard. What if the 4-star guy wants to commit. Do we give up on Cayden? You're not getting both, so a bird in the hand...?

I think Ben's takes the first one that commits. That would include signing his NIL contract. Its great we are in the lead for this kid, but its still less than a 50% probability given his many suitors.

I don't know if Daughtry comes to Iowa or not, but it's more than a little impressive that the Hawks are legitimately in the convo. Iowa has even seemed in the lead. Iowa! And there isn't really any connection, other than Daughtry and McCollum have both done their research and think this could be a good match for the point guard and the point guard whisperer.

I thought it might take another year or two of great point guard play coming out of Iowa City for a kid like this to be dancing with Iowa. This is a top 10 overall kid. I know recruiting is way different these days, but I'm not sure Iowa has ever landed a recruit of this magnitude before.

And while I agree the odds are no better than 50/50 at the moment, the fact this kid sees what McCollum has done with PGs and has Iowa near the top of his early leaderboard speaks to where the program is likely headed.

Jump ahead for a minute. A year from now, Iowa could be bringing everyone back off the current roster. Now, we all know how difficult it is keeping rosters intact these days, but I think it is likely Iowa will return most, especially the guys who end up in the rotation. And then say you add Daughtry to the mix? That feels like a team that could contend for the conference title. Lot of length, size, shooting, defense, a couple PGs....and having Combs and Manyawu around for a 5th year would be pretty much like having two player-coaches on the squad. The future is very bright for both basketball squads in Iowa City.

If the other kid calls to commit, you might call Daughtry and give him a last chance to jump in the boat, but it would be hard to pass up the other kid on the hopes you might land Daughtry. Its a tough situation. That said, it sounds like Ben and this kid have bonded, and maybe Ben has a good instinct on what his actual chances are to land the kid.

Daughtry is a cousin of Brad Banks and CJ Jones. So there is that connection. That may influence how long Coach is willing to wait on him.
Did not know this. That is interesting.

It pretty obvious that he is high on Iowa because of McCollum. But my gut instinct says he may end up at a higher paying school with a "very good" coach. We all know Iowa is not going to be the top bidder for his services so we have to hope that he sees beyond one or two years.

I honestly don't know that Iowa's financial offer will not be competitive. NIL has changed so much. In three short years the advantages that the SEC had in football have evaporated because now everyone can cheat and pay players. Big10 schools and donors have more money than the SEC schools. Now, does that always mean that money flows through to these kids to play sports? Probably not. But, Iowa seems to have made a financial commitment to the MBB program to be on the top end of the legal money that can be passed through to these kids. Collectives are going by the way side it seems and these sweet heart private NIL deals are getting real scrutiny (ask Nebraska). All that is by way of saying it may be that Iowa is offering about the same as everyone else, and so it will come down to what it used to come down to: fit and relationships.

We'll see where it goes.

Interesting. Although a cousin (maybe second cousin even?) who played a different sport a quarter of a century ago at the school doesn't seem like it would have much impact.

Awe, the missing piece for Iowa that cost Fran so dearly over many of years. Right to the POINT.

Ben brought in an All American Point guard with him. The question will be proven soon enough as too whether or not Ben can repeat this feat on a regular basis and lift the program to new heights on a regular basis. It could be argued that he already has, but one year needs to be proven to be the normal standard and not just a flash in the pan.

Fran did great with Bigs but his Kryptonite was having that all around, all Big Ten point guard and that really bit him in the ass in March which resulted in early outs.

To me the most memorable moment for Fran was upsetting Purdue in the Big Ten tournament. Awe but alas then came March madness and Fran was put in his usual March Madness straight jacket.

Fran's issues with pushing through to the second weekend of the Tourney extended beyond just his inability to land a great PG. And, its not like he had no talent at that position. Marble was first team all-conference. Gessell was highly recruited and turned out to be a 4-year starter. Bohannon was a lot of fun. :)

That said, yes, defense and guard play tend to travel in March. Ben's philosophy and approach gel with late season success more so than Fran.

Ben is just a better coach all around. That is the difference.

I don't know that Ben is a better offensive coach than Fran. We'll see, but Fran set a high bar on that front and his offenses consistently ranked high nationally in pts/game.

As we all know, Fran's blind spot was defense and his stubborn refusal to hire a defensive coach and admit his own shortcomings in that area. And as the cliche goes, defenses win ________________ .....well, you know.

Frans teams faded in February.

One has to dearly love alliteration

Agreed, I think defense was the biggest factor for Fran's lack of success in March. Athletic teams had their way with Iowa under Fran.
