Hank has earned his job

That throw to RVZ was perfect. The timing of it from when he hit his back foot to putting it right on his outside shoulder yet didn't make RVZ have to really extend his arms for it. Made it easy for him to pin it to his body so he wouldn't juggle it going to the ground.

The defender let RVZ have way too much room to spin towards the sideline. The defender may as well have not even been there. I'm not sure how much RVZ and Brown practice that but my gosh that was about as beautiful as a Stockton to Malone pick and roll.

That was a great play call. I think he was long by 5 yards and either the wrong shoulder or wrong communication with Diaz.

But damn....if he hit that throw.....that was 7. All the way. Diaz had 3 steps on the guy and had the defender all turned around. I know the plays are all scripted, but I would have one of those deep to Diaz in any first drive after a first down or two. Hell, maybe any drive.
The run game simply must improve if Iowa is going to have a special season.

Yes, But ......we never really tried to go deep ..untill we had to  and really never did . Diaz is now a focus on other teams' defensive strategy, (maybe a bit premature) but that alone opens up our other receivers/te's with little midranges routes, and when they adjust gets him some BIG HITTERS plays
Diaz is going to get the other team's best coverage guy all season. Lester and Hank are going to have to find other guys to loosen the D and loosen the coverage on Diaz.

RVZ is the perfect red zone WR. He's tall & lengthy with sure hands. You have all options with him in the red zone. He showed two of his skills with his two TD's by catching a slant route and the back shoulder catch to win the game. The other valuable skill is being able to high point a ball when needed.

I wonder if he will continue to get more involved in the offense as the season goes along. Bet he will. This will help loosen up Diaz I feel as well.

Hank had to make the throw(s), Reese had to make the catch. That's undeniable.

But what put the Hawks in the place where a win was possible while getting stomped by Michigan was the bend-don't-break...as much as it frustrates the shit out of us. Iowa football teams under Kay Eff and Phil never, ever let go of the rope. Sometimes they lose their grip, but you have to admit they don't let go of it.

Iowa had a couple tips to help on their scoring drive. I'm so glad the winning pass was not a fluke or tipped ball that was caught. I'm glad it was a legit play, route and skilled pass & catch (with footwork) that resulted in the win. People are going to look the end of the game and give so much more credit than if the play was a tipped ball and lucky catch.

Yep, agree. Love Kirk talking about his team's willingness to "stay in the fight" and the bend, bend, bend, but don't break D. But man, it'd make everything a lot easier if they could generate a few more first downs with the run game.

We might have all been a little too eager to hear the take that the o-line had simply reloaded.

Maybe Iowa will feel more comfortable now trusting the passing game, and go that route to set up the run.

How many trips to the RZ did Michigan have? At one point I know they only had 3 pts to show for 3 trips down there and obviously that doesn't cut it. Even if they woulda just got fgs on both of those that woulda been the difference and made the dominos of everything after that be way different. To me if I'm Michigans OC that's what wouldn't let me sleep after that.

Hank moves so much better within the pocket, especially when to step up at the right time and place. He has a sense about getting out of the pocket at the right time and always looks to throw, not run. Between his skills snd the O line’s ability to pass block, I am impressed. Mich got 1 sack. I think I recall that was the first time Hank got sacked in 4 games, right?

Agree, Hank moves much better in pocket than Petras or Stanley.

Completely agree. But I also think we are going to continue to face stacked boxes until we demonstrate the ability to consistently throw the ball. I'm not saying each throw has to be a 40 yard bomb but a mixture of short, intermediate and long throws. And we have not shown we have that ability in the Michigan game. IMO, that will open up the run game.

And take advantage of it when it happens. Go back and watch the third play from the end of the game. They didn't even replay it live. Diaz totally beats his man and the safety bit on an under route. Diaz had a few yards on his guy and all Hank had to do is lead him to the middle of the field, but instead he threw it to the sideline. That was a touchdown right there and would have ended it as well. So it wasn't as if there were no chances.

Hank can certainly step up into the pocket. He can totally roll out. He doesn't throw picks. I don't know much about football, but he was so good at finding space and finding an open dude on Saturday in that drive. I kept fighting the urge to scream "just run it" because he'd roll out or step up and have nothing but green in front of him. If it had been Gronowski taking those snaps, he would have had 90 yards rushing on that drive. And the clock would have run out before they could get the last play off from the 1.

I wanna know if Petras was unable to roll out and/or run the boot.
Or was that just Brain not recognizing that rolling out and the boot turned average Iowa QBs into pretty good QBs, and pretty good Iowa QBs into pretty memorable ones.

I hope people don't get me wrong about loosely comparing Hank to Petras. I think Petras was very underserved by Brain. I think Brain's offensive scheme and o-line schemes meant Petras had less time and ate a lot more dirt. Hard to say if he had the outlet passes Hank does built into the scheme, but hard to imagine he didn't. I still believe Petras was way better than he ever got the chance to be. Doesn't mean he was good. Just way better than he ever had a chance to be.

At the moment you can't argue against Hank. But, I'm gonna need to see a little more still before I start turning naked cartwheels. Need a rushing game. And we're gonna need to see him be more consistent and produce more than 1 or 2 drives against FBS teams.

That was a touchdown if Hank had thrown it 5 yards less. Didn't even have to be to the correct shoulder. Diaz could have twirled around 5 different times. Left...right....and back to the left shoulder again with a little pirouette and a curtsey and he woulda caught that ball and loped in for a TD.

Great post, and for now, we are all likely safe from your naked cartwheels. If we do the unthinkable v OSU, start practicing!! I don't think that will happen, though.

I tend to agree with you about Petras. He was a decently highly regarded recruit with a great arm. I don't know how good he could have been under someone like Lester. Brian did that offense, and Petras, dirty.

Petras and Brown are very similar QBs, but Petras had more natural ability IMHO. He was decent in his one year away from Iowa against lesser competition (65% completion percentage is excellent). We can never understate just how profoundly bad BF was as a QB coach and OC. I believe Petras would have done very well under Lester.

Brown is like a Temu Petras who came from the wrong side of the tracks and hence has some of that dawg in him for when things get dicey. More poise under fire than Spencer did. I don't think Petras makes that drive in the big house with that kind of pressure and chaos, even if he did have a better arm and better reads.

I feel like he has 80% of Petras' technical ability and 80% of Beathard's YOLO. If that makse sense.

It is amazing how the Legend of Hank has grown so quickly. A month ago the ENTIRE fan base wanted Heck to be the QB mainly because Brown "was not a gamer", "had happy feet", "wilted under the pressure" "was a practice only performer."

4 games in and we are getting Beatherd comparisons? So good.

Look, Hank has not turned the ball over, played well under pressure, and that last drive was legend. But, I am going to hold for another week before I start to compare him to some of our greats. If he performs well against OSU, regardless of the outcome, I will be ready to believe that Hank can be our next CJStanzTateBank.

Honestly though, that’s what’s fun about college football. NFL could completely vanish off the face of the earth and I wouldn’t care even a little bit.

No other sport on earth has the storylines, the drama, love, hate, heartbreak, hyperbole…all of it.
