Gutsy Win by Iowa

The win Friday against Nebraska was a terrific job by the players on the Iowa team. A lot of teams would have folded their tents after Nebraska went up 20-13. Instead, we drove it down their throats on a 14 play drive and changed the momentum. Our defense shut them out on the final 5 possessions of the game.

Great win for the kids against a bitter rival who put everything into that game. It was a thrilling win from my perspective, and it was great to see the players celebrating after the game.

Re-watched last night. N. made it really tough for Iowa’s run game in the first half with LB’s and Safeties essentially ignoring the pass. Additionally, N. stayed in the cutback lanes and Iowa’s running backs were confused about where the run gaps would be. Too much lateral running by them played in N’s favor.

At halftime, the coaches told Tyler to run straight into the assigned gap, regardless of the look. I think Iowa did more straight ahead power blocking as well. So, he did. It took a lot of guts to run the way Tyler did. He took some really tough hits but stayed with it. It paid off. Iowa’s run game and the time of possession ultimately carried the day. Also, our D was absolutely great after N’s first drive in the 2nd half. N. likely played their best defensive game of the year. Credit due.

If Petras and his receivers would have made N. pay for their full commit to stopping the run, Iowa may have won by a couple of TD’s. Too many drops by receivers and lack of accuracy by Petras made it a close game. And, N’s defensive backs broke up some passes.

We won.
