George Kittle Becomes An Impact Player...

Before practice, a reporter asked Brian Hoyer if Kittle has impressed him “Yeah, he has,” Hoyer said. “I joked because his offensive coordinator there is [University of Iowa offensive coordinator] Brian Ferentz. He was with me in New England. I said, ‘I’m going to text him and tell him that they were using you the wrong way.’ You think of Iowa, you think of these big, blocking tight ends. He has a really good football awareness, is what I would call it. A feel for where to break, how to break, read-zones. I’ve been surprised and, obviously, it’s a good thing for us to have a guy who has that football awareness and some feel of the game to it.”

I've always said this, this is why Iowa players, in particular TE and linemen, are so sought after and drafted. They come in ready to play and ready to contribute to the team right away. They are NFL ready because KF runs his program like an NFL program.

That has to be their largest selling point to recruits. They need to really emphasize and sell that. I'm sure they do.

Another quote that I found interesting.

"As Kittle jumped, safety Lorenzo Jerome tried to push him out of bounds, but he still landed both feet in the end zone. This was the best catch of the afternoon. Kittle is a terrific player. Quarterbacks throw to him much more than any other non-wide receiver on the team,...."

If he can stay healthy, I think he can be a major weapon for the 49ers. May not have had Moeaki pure freak athletic nature, but Kittle is definitely great in all aspects. Great hands, Fast, and can block.

Does it ever make you wonder why we couldn't get this guy open more? How many catches did he have last year? He should have caught 6-7 balls a game.

I was thinking the exact same thing. How did he not have more catches. He's at a freaking mini-camp and getting the most catches of a non-WR, a damn rookie. I tell you what it was and what it says, it says how inept GD was at a down the field passing game.

He never got the catches because Iowa didn't throw to the middle of the field or downfield. GD basically cock blocked the offense by only utilizing 1/4 or 1/3rd of the field, which honestly, an opposing college team can defend. There are only so many out patterns for the TE.

Not at all surprising he's impressing in camp already. He's a stud athlete that filled out. The other TEs the 49ers have weren't goin to be scaring anyone. McDonald drops half the balls thrown to him and for some reason Baalke gave him a significant extention right before he got fired. Which makes it tougher to cut/trade him. My guess is McDonald and Kittle will be their 2 TEs with Juszchek as an Hback do everything weapon. Celek might be cut unless he plays lights out when camp/pre season starts

I believe I remember hearing that Kittle was hurt for a good portion of last year and just played through it... that probably did not help his cause for getting open for passes

He injured his ankle at Purdue missing games after that and tried to play through it. He was not healthy at least half the season. Not sure how the experts above did not know this when commenting on the lack of catches last year???
