Gatens is shooting 29% from 3 since traveling to The Barn

And I just watched Harrison Barnes hit a huge 3 with 3 seconds left to win it for Carolina. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrvggggggghhhhhhh!

All Iowa Mr. Basketball's are not created equal.

Can we all just agree that Matt Gatens is a nice young man from Iowa City, but that his D-1 basketball skills are extremely limited. He tries, but he just can't get it done. If Iowa is to be better next year, barring a miracle, Gatens needs to be an experienced back-up with limited minutes.

And unless Iowa pulls one of the major upsets of the season against Purdue on Saturday, I really think Fran would be doing everyone a favor by just pulling the plug on this season. Recruiting is the only thing that's going to help the Hawkeyes. CBI? No thanks.

Sorry to hijack, Spank, but I need this thread to ask the following ...

Jack Christensen's passing skills or Matt Gaten's shooting skills?

Which was the most mismatched skill to position to expectation, JC as a 4* QB or MG as a 4* SG?

Discuss.

JC in charge at least got us to .500

Not that it really matters, but rivals had Gatens as a 3*.

Even Matt's FT percentage has been declining for several weeks. He clunked one of the two on the Izzo tech tonight...

JC had better talent around him, Gatens needs the offseason more than anyone. Gatens is the most scrutinized player for whatever reason in the past few years. I guess when I saw he was going to go to Iowa my feeling was he would not be a highly productive guy until his senior year, but would be Iowa's sixth man that could come in and not hurt the team. With all the turnover and change he has been forced into a greater role than he is capable. Matt is a good player, not a great one, he is not a player that gets a team started, he is a player that goes as the team does. Expect to see Matt have a good, if not great senior year as Iowa will have many more options next season with Basabe blossoming into a 1st team All-Big Ten talent with a full offseason, Cartwright will have a grip on how to run a team from day one instead of halfway through the season. Iowa will have a bench and additional weapons to help out in the scoring department. Think about this, I heard rumors he wanted to leave Iowa if TL was back, so how much better has he became since his freshman year...not much an environment can hinder growth. I have liked what I have seen from Gatens this year, I do feel he is better defensively than in years past and the past few games he has tried to go to the basket more, but here is another problem Iowa has. Other teams bigs don't respect Iowa's bigs' shooting range, this is where Aaron White is going to help a ton...let him hang out in that area where Cole/Basabe have been and he will make that shot at a better percentage, this will open up driving lanes for Iowa's ball handlers and help their overall shooting percentage. We criticize May/Gatens for not being able to drive, but Iowa doesn't have threats to counteract the collapse when they get to the lane, Cartwright has the same thing happen to him at times. If Iowa can get Katenda to go with White, the lane becomes wide open for the guards to get to the lane and Basabe to clean up the misses.

Hahaha! Was never really a fan of Scout. He was a top 150 player(#120) per Rivals.

He is our only top 150 player, and not a high one at that. And people wonder why we suck. Gatens is a complementary Big 10 player with nobody to complement.

Cartwright will likely be an all Big Ten player this year.

Honorable mention maybe. He doesn't have the rep to beat out McCamey, Battle, Taylor, Moore, or Lucas. Morris is a pretty darn good player. Hulls is Indiana's catalyst.

I like Cartwright, think he is fantastic player. Going into next year we have 3 legit Big 10 major minute players in Cartwright, Gatens, and Basabe. Both Gatens and Basabe, at this stage, are more complimentary in the sense you can't consistently give them the ball and expect them to create efficient offense. We have one legit Big 10 bench player in Brommer. We're going to need to two or three major minute players to emerge and a couple bench players.

Couldn't agree more. Gatens is the most overrated player in the big ten and all of this nonsense about coaches scheming to shut him down is absurd. I would leave him open to shoot all he wants. I got hammered a few weeks ago for stating McCaffrey's goal should be to recruit Gatens to the bench next season and I stand by that comment. Another steallar example of why we need OUT of state recruits in order to get better.
