Freeman in portal

I post solely out of mild interest in a former Hawkeye who left, was overpaid for performance, and is now looking for a new program to grift. No interest in a reunion.

What do you think the market is for him? Also, I didn't really follow, but any sense as to why he struggled so much this year? McDermott is a good coach and he had over a season and a half of games to evaluate before offering Freeman, so it can't simply be a matter that Fran's system gave him good stats and McDermott didn't realize what kind of player he was until he arrived.

He had so much potential. I'm glad he left as it opened the door for more deserving players. He chased the money and lost.
Well he chased and found the $ so in that regard he won cause he wouldn't have gotten as much had he stayed. I don't think Ben woulda wanted him anyway. He wasn't a rim protector type. He isn't skilled offensively all that much. He's pretty one dimensional. Ben woulda played Cam and Banks over him anyway so things just worked out how they were supposed to as far as I'm concerned

I doubt Creighton told him to leave, but I am certain they told him he would be getting a massive pay cut and that he would have to play better if he wanted more minutes.

Creighton is my secondary team, so I watched a lot of games. It was a combination of things as to why he flopped. Mostly, he was beat out as a starter by a better center. That said, he was still recovering from injury and I think that hampered his development. To my eyes, when he did get into games he was effective. I could see him landing somewhere like a Minnesota and being effective. He needs the right coach and system, and Creighton just wasn't that.

This is a really hard game to play, but say Iowa's payroll is $9M for next season. What do you think McCollum would consider Freeman's price point to be? In other words, say Freeman is healthy, has a great attitude and wanted to join the Hawks (so no docking him for any of those things - just consider him another guy on the market)....obviously McCollum takes him at $0, but how high does that number go when he has $9M to work with to assemble a roster? $200k? $500k? $1M?

I'm not sure Freeman fits with the Ben McCollum style. He never showed enough effort on the defensive side. Could be a deal breaker for BMC, at any price.
Agreed. You don't just take a guy because he is cheap or free if he does not fit your system. I don't see Freeman as a good fit. That said, you can't teach size and Freeman is a decent athlete and rim protector that we do not currently have on the roster. Who knows what we have in Jirak.

If I were Ben, would I take a flyer on Freeman for a cheap price like 200k? Why not. 6'11 guys with three years of D1 experience don't exactly grow on trees.

I guess the question is why would Freeman have any interest in Iowa or vice versa? He had no ties to the state before Fran recruited him. The guy who brought him to Iowa was canned, and if you believe his petulant kid, is butt hurt over the whole thing. He has no relationship with the current staff that I know of. Doesn't add up to any mutual interest, but crazier things have happened.

Potential but you have to wonder how much he wants it. If coach Ben will annoy him with the work and shape he needs to be in or would he buy in? Tempting if cheap. Hopefully he would want to show everybody what he can do and contribute to a winning team that could go far. He has the size but inside his heart and head is what would either make it a good thing or eff it up.

Agree. 6' 11" doesn't grow on trees.

He could end up as the best reclamation project since American Pickers

Who did Davis reclamate...Lohaus?
