Fort (Ferentz) Knox begins

Fall camp begins today. I always get excited when this happens but sometimes, I wonder why. We'll get some player interviews, some flashes of good plays in the 1-2 open practices. Otherwise, we don't hear much as the players grind and earn their way into the depth chart.

To me the most pimportant thing of the next month is always the depth chart that comes out the week of the first game. It shows who has worked hard over the off season, shown their mettle and is now ready to make their mark on the field.

Can't wait until Sep 5................go hawks

The other thing you can take to the bank is you'll see video of all the QBs throwing unguarded 'down and out' routes to all the WRs -- even tho they NEVER throw that pass in actual games.

We should probably start a separate thread on this, but to me, I do not see a ton of irreplaceable guys on this years roster. We are young and have a lot of options at most positions, so we can take a few injury hits. The exceptions to that would be Lauck, Lutmer and any of the front line DTs. Those injuries would hurt.

Is this protocol really any different from any other major program?

I'm looking to see which guys emerge. Between the portal, the incoming freshmen and guys already in the program, if they are going to be as good as I expect them to be (12-0, of course) then we need guys from all three categories to step up.

I don't know who they will be, I don't think we'll learn their names during camp although we might get some ideas. Rather, like the QBs, this might play out thru September, the non-con games, get ready for the Big 3.

I chuckled as Chad L, wrote an article after or maybe even during the first day of practice. He spoke with authority on the state of the team, the warning about DL and praise in other parts of the team - as if he's been watching them for 2 weeks.

Talked to a family member last week and Lutmer is 100% as of right now with no injuries. That could change at any time obviously in college football.

He's probably top of my list for Would Hurt the Most if he got injured. Guy is a baller and that defense will need playmakers in the Back 7.

In Chad Leistikow's hawk central text thread, he mentioned that 3 Hawks have stood out so far in camp.

WR Tony Diaz on O
S Anthony Hawkins and LB Derek Weiskopf on D

Wish there was a DT on that list, but good to hear those guys are balling. Diaz just keeps getting mentioned.
