Expansion thoughts

What happens to the Big 12 if the Big 10 goes to 16 by adding Nebraska & Missouri and the Pac-10 adds Colorado? Would replacing them be enough? I don't think so because it is safe to say every conference would be trying to expand in order to avoid being left behind or have a mass exodus from the conference. Would the Pac-10 think 12 isn't enough addition anymore? Would the SEC & ACC go up to 14 or more? Could the Big East survive losing anybody? Are there enough teams to let every conference expand?

By the Big 10 going to 16 it is safe to say it would cause some problems throughout the college athletics and change the landscape completely. Especially depending on who they take. For the sake of arguement we'll go with the most recent reports on the Big 10s additions (Neb., Mizz., Pitt., Rut., Syr.)

Big East being down to 5 members would need Notre Dame to join full time in order to survive or else the ACC would attempt, imo, to take 4 of their members. If Notre Dame finally sees the writing on the wall I could see them accepting on 1 condition. That condition being the Big East only being a 6 team conference in football. This would allow them to still be relatively independent with the schedule having 7 OOC games. If the Big East plays this right they might be able to get NBC to become more of a partner with the conference as opposed to just a partner with ND. (i have a couple more possibilities for the BE)

I feel the ACC's top choices for expansion would be West Virginia, UConn, Cincinnati and Louisville. This wouldn't hurt their strength in Football or Basketball. But in all honesty if the Big East is able to hold onto it's remaining members I have no idea where they would go and not have it look like a desperate move, which could make them vulnerable to the SEC.

The SEC's highest priority for Strength and money would be to destroy the Big 12 by stealing Texas then Oklahoma. That would be a huge for the SEC but I don't see Texas wanting to join a conference with Academic Standards so much lower then their own. If the SEC is unable to get Texas I don't think They'll try to take anyone else from the Big 12. I hope they would turn next to the ACC and try and take Miami and Florida State. I am saying hope because I feel this would be a horrible choice. They would gain nothing by it since they already have a strong Florida market and would likely have a negative impact on the $17m each school currently gets. it would be expanding just to expand. I think the SEC is in the toughest position because there aren't a lot of good options open to them.

Big 12 expansion has a couple directions it could go. I don't see how they could drop down to 9 then add 5 or 7. so they would likely just replace its lost 3 members. but I'll try to think outside of the box with this one with a highly unlikely possibility. what if they just added 1, say TCU (least likely imo) and split into 2 divisions. Texas div and Tornado Valley Div. Maybe only play 6 conference games all played at the end of the year. This could let all Big 12 teams work out the kinks before starting conference play, that way all would be playing their best football at the end of the year when it really matters.

What you are missing is the Pac Ten.

I am hearing Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, and Kansas to the Pac Ten. That would give the Pac Ten 8 out of the top 20 media markets, compared to the Big Ten's 6.

Also, the Pac Ten fits Texas' academic standards.

yeah, i wasn't sure what they would do outside of Colorado. but Wow. that would be huge. I think they would have to go with a 4x4.
