Absolutely no surprise on the indecision at QB. The DE position seems to have some talent but very little experience. It will be fun watching them develop. I hope they're not limiting both QBs by not committing to one and getting him more first team reps.
 
I was a little surprised about the left DE spot They were pumping up Brown quite a bit this fall camp. I'm sure they will be rotating quite a bit with the 4th year guy getting the start. i also saw a interview that he was up to 265, they have him at 245 on list

With it being hot Saturday I would anticipate guys rotating quite a bit so who is number one on the depth chart really doesn't mean anything.
 
Depth charts are dumb. I see no purpose in it. If I were the coach I'd draw all 105 names out of a hat and fill in the blanks. What are they gonna do?

Yeah. F those fans that actually expect the coaches to produce something that could be useful and actually make the game more entertaining. The fans should know the whole goal is to make things as confusing as possible.

I think KF gives the depth chart the attention it is due. It is a good faith statement of who is likely to start and rotate in, but I don't suspect he spends more than 10 minutes reviewing and approving it.

While I get that there is no strategic advantage to it, fans do expect it. And, even jackasses like Belichek understand that without fans, no one is making millions to crash into each other.

What is more interesting is that the Big10 now has an availability/injury report due three days before the game. This rule, unlike depth charts, is not optional.
 
I have listened to two different "insiders" on podcasts that are expecting Heck to get the first couple series, with Brown then to rotate in and they will play it by ear in the second half depending upon score and play.

My hope is that Heck looks crisp and effective and he starts the game and second half. Hopefully that cements him as the starter for ISU. I think we all hope this gets resolved Saturday so the team can rally around a starter before the Clowns come to town.
 
We're all rightfully fixated on QB, but pretty interesting that Buhr beat out the FCS All-American transfer at kicker.

I'd argue this position has almost been as important as QB at Iowa in recent years. We likely have taken it for somewhat granted that Iowa has had an outstanding placekicker more years than not going back 10-12 seasons.

Iowa can endure below average QB play and still string together a lot of wins. I don't believe Iowa can endure both below average QB play and mediocre field goal kicking and win that many games.

Crossing our fingers at both positions as we sit here on September 1st.

I am not hearing good things regarding special teams. I cannot remember anything like this where we had to replace the coordinator and literally every position player down to the long snapper. KF said he feels good about the guys in on the various special teams plays, but the specialists themselves are shaky. I suspect we will be okay on punting and punt returns. Dakins wasn't super awesome last year, and this new kid just needs to be consistent. Lutmer should be above average in the return, but obviously he is replacing the best ever. Its the kicking game that scares me. I don't see KF trying a lot of 50+ field goal tries. So, maybe more going for on 4th down or pooch kicks. STs gonna be an adventure for sure.

That is certainly why the injury reports are being mandated now.

I agree that depth charts do allow media to filter information out to the fans, but I certainly look forward to the depth chart every week.

The one thing that I look forward to changing when KF retires is more media access. As Iowa fans, we don't realize how little access the media gets compared to other programs. While I understand Fort Kinnick, I don't like it.

We can only hope that Buhr was mentored well by a now NFL place kicker.
 
I'm happy to see my kid's friend on the 2 deep, not on the second page.
A great kid who lived on the same floor as my kid at Peterson as freshmen. He would hide a Hawkeye football button somewhere on the dorm floor each week and whoever found it would get various bits of swag or goodies he got or had easy access to as a player on the team. Hats, pennants, flags, doodads, or he would take people to eat where he got 'sponsor' goodies. I mean, a totally simple, fun, college freshman, wholesome thing that made the world better. My kid needed nothing extra to make him a fan. But, what great PR for the other kids who might not have cared so much. I do believe he's been picked for non-field leadership roles on the team. Makes sense.

Good kid. Good student. Hope he has a great year.
 
Special Teams... We should hope that the other coaches( that are still with us ) knew what LaVar was doing and keep on doing it the same way with the same intensity. I wouldn't think there be a huge drop off. Kind of like when we lost our strength coach.... we kept up the same amount strength as a team just kept doing it the same way just a different guy driving the bus.
