Decals…

Moving past the topic of reacting to the heat…I haven’t done much media perusal today…

Heard mention of removing the decals à la Hayden Fry (god rest his soul) 2019.

Is this actually being considered or talked about by the U or is it just HN banter?

I recall Hayden doing that a couple of times, but I've never quite understood the impetus/connection. Did he ever explain why that particular gesture occurred to him, as opposed to placing initials on the helmets, wearing a black ribbon across a logo, etc.?

AFAIK, it's me talking about it. I see nobody else mention it on social media.
I seem to be the only one outside of here talking about it.
I think it's warranted.

1991 was the first time. After the campus shooting. It was OSU at home.
A couple years later they did it for the Alamo Bowl. One of the player's parents or family was killed in an accident. Either a few days before, or possibly on the way to the TX. Can't remember.
Then again a few years later for another bowl game right after Hayden Fry passed.

While the campus shooting didn't directly involve the team, it was a sublimely and tasteful way for the most visible aspect of the University community in that moment to show the grief we felt. I was a student at the time. There was talk of possibly cancelling the game. I'd compare the removal of the decals to what it felt like when MLB resumed after 9/11 with Bush throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium, or Jack Buck reading a poem on home base at Busch. And singing "God Bless America" instead of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". Like...not everything is back to normal. But, WE WILL move forward and find joy.

The other two times were to honor and grieve someone tied to the team. I think even Fry would accept that an HMB member is tied to the team. As noted, it doesn't mean they can't play the game without them. But, they are tied to the team. AND the gameday experience.

I will also note, that they won every single one of those games. Including the one against OSU.

I think.......how cool.....would it be if BOTH teams removed their decals?

Hayden did it twice and Kirk did it after Hayden died.
I posted the instances above.

The first time I remember decals off the helmets was in 1991 I believe after the student shooting on campus at the U of Iowa. Gang Lu killed 5 people before killing himself. This was prior to Columbine so a real shocker around the country.

The next game I believe they played Ohio State at Ohio State and beat them 16-9.

I was a student there then and had class in Van Allen that day but skipped it. Got more calls that day from friends and family than all others combined.

I just went and looked.

I was exiting Jessup after paying a Ubill right about the time he was going in. Or within moments of him showing up.
By the time I got to the bottom of the hill and was heading into the Union, they were locking the doors. The whole thing took about 10 minutes. No cell phones/etc. I figure by the time they decided to lock everything down....get word out...and get someone to go physically lock the doors on the south side of the union.....was at least 10 minutes. Which means, he was entering Jessup right around when I was leaving. I was never freaked afterwards, total opposite ends of the hallway.

Also, this would be a weekend where they likely would wear the American flag Tigerhawk decals as the game would be 9/12. Certainly for the 25 year anniversary.

Take em off.

Would loooove to see ISU take them off as well. Iowans duking it out on the field, but standing in support one who they can both claim as a brother/friend/fellow Iowan? Just red and black helmets. That's literally why I love the state and miss living there. They do that kind of thing pretty well in Iowa. You can be cynical all you want, but if you've not lived in Missouri, or at least, St. Louis....we don't do handle do 'support' or 'class' as well around here as you do in in Iowa. Farkkk....I think it would be so cool.

The amount of support the HMB is getting from all the other bands out there? It's pretty amazing. There's some bands that have announced they will play the Iowa fight song at their upcoming halftimes. I would bet almost all of them will either wear a ribbon, or make some small gesture.

We need that lady who got The Wave started....but that Facebook page has become a ghost town.
And I'm reluctant to have my kid text his friend who's on the team and part of their "community leadership" group.

I wish I did the Twitters. Then I could at least @ all kinds of people.
I gotta believe if Kirk wants to do it, he'll do it. He knows what it means.
