Cole will be a Hawkeye Legend Forever

What an unbelievable heart-warming story:

1. 2 major knee surgeries.
2. 3 coaches.
3. Lots of losing.

This kid comes back and has a great senior season. He has been super the past 10 games and put this team on his shoulders today to beat one of the best teams in college basketball.

He is a great young man. Loyal to his team and his school. He never gave up. And there has been no controversy with him. Great heart, but humble.

He will be an inspiration to this program for many years to come.

The lesson here: Never give up!

If Cartwright is ok, something truly weird could happen in the Big Ten tournament. I just have a funny feeling........

I got to talk to him last week, and asked him what he wanted his legacy to be. He didn't really know, he felt like other people do that for you. Great, humble answer.

Well, his legacy was cemented tonight: hardest-working, most determined Hawkeye since Chris Street, and that's REALLY saying something.

He made me so proud to be an Iowa grad and Iowa fan today. What an unbelievable effort by Cole.

Let's keep it going... the season is not over!!

That is the type of kid that Iowa needs to get on campus. Cole never stopped working, never gave up and never bitched or moaned..............just did what he was supposed to do and that is the type of kid that Iowa people love. He will be longed remembered for toughing it out and in the long run turning this program around.!!

I get that people want the latest thing to be the greatest of all time and it's all about what is happening right now. But there's been a lot of posts today that are way over the top. If three years from now Iowa is still struggling to get into the tournament no one is going to say Cole is a hawkeye legend then. Cole plays hard but there have been many Hawks since Chris Street who played just as hard as Cole. Greg Brunner worked his *** off every night, so did Horner, they played through struggles as well. Gray squad guys like Daryl Moore and Jason Bauer were pretty damn hard working too. Not to mention Jess Settles who went all out every night for 10 years here.

Cole had a good career, he played hard, he stuck with the program through some tough times but to say he's the hardest working player since Chris Street or a hawkeye legend is just slightly over the top.

Other players played just as hard (I'm a big Brunner fan, too). But how many were recruited by one coach, played for two more, during the worst 4-year stretch in program history? And watched their teammates walk out the door one by one? On top of suffering a serious knee injury that required two surgeries to repair?

There are a lot of players who would have given up after all that. And NOBODY has had as much adversity to face as Cole, at least not since Street's playing days.

Are you pi$$ed that Iowa won?

I don't think he's ******, but I think he has a point. It's way to early to tell if today's game is the turning point - the 2000 game against Penn State, if you will.

It's understandable that people want to wax poetic after a game like today, a game that Iowa has played many times this year and come up short. Jarryd would have had a great game even if Iowa lost, and the reality is that nobody will know if this game will have any lasting effect until next January.

I don't care if this game is the turning point for the program...I'm talking about giving Cole some love.

There was a great article on hawkcentral.com regarding an interview with Jake Kelly. He made a comment about how much respect he gives to Cole for staying no matter what. I remember reading that and thinking about how right he was.

A guy recruited by Alford, played for Lick, and stayed with Fran in a transition state. Say what you want, but Cole is a legend for a reason that I don't know we have ever seen before. He stayed with the program no matter what. Put all of that into the fact that he is a solid starter who scores points, is our big man, and leads the team. I don't care what other people say. He is an Iowa Hawkeye legend all his own.

I'm not a huge Cole fan and never have been in terms of my thoughts on Jarryd as a player. However, as a person, the guy's been through a great deal and fought through a ton of adversity throughout his career. His heart was in it 100% and he truly loved being a Hawkeye and has the heart of a champion. That said, as a player he is average at best, and not what I'd call a "legend". I honestly think once Iowa turns the corner and gets back to their winning ways his play and presence on the court will have been forgotten.

Jarryd reminds me of Aaron Kampman, who came in on the tail end of Haydens run,and then the first two years of KF(3-19),but never wavered. Played great his senior year despite the losing. High character leader on the team...just like Jarryd. Guys that are there for the beginning of the turnaround are not forgotten,by this fan anyway.

Congrats to Jarryd for his teams big win today, and for his legacy as a faithful and loyal hard working Hawkeye...forever.
