Callie Levin hits the transfer portal

I don't really know any details, but I'd hope Levin wanted to play more and understood she wasn't likely to ascend much beyond a limited role player in her next two years at Iowa. I still don't understand why she wasn't redshirted her first year. Again, I don't know any details but I hope she weighed all the advantages of staying at Iowa, but understood her likely path if she stayed and just wants to play more over the next two years.

On the other hand, Deal seems to be leaving because she didn't play enough this past year. Because there certainly seems to be plenty of opportunity in front of her at Iowa if she were to stay.

I think Levin makes perfect sense. There was not a more engaged Hawk on the bench than her all season. She was forced into duty on a few occasions due to injuries and foul trouble, and she always gave her all. But her ceiling is limited. That is also why she wasn't red-shirted (you don't tie up a scholarship for another year for someone who won't be a difference-maker). Because of her demonstrated love for the team, I thought she would come back, but she is never going to average more than 5 minutes per game for the Hawks. But she could go to the MAC and be a much bigger contributor, and that makes sense.

I wish she'd change her mind and stay. Callie improved from her freshman year and might have taken another jump her Junior year. Brings a ton of energy from the bench or when she's on the floor. That is hard to duplicate and is an asset to the team. Callie change your mind and stay! People like Syd, Taylor, Hannah Stewart and Amanda Ollinger waited around till their Senior year to finally start. I know nobody wants to do that anymore and it's to bad.

I don't think those comparisons hold up.

Levin played 154 minutes through her first two seasons.

Ollinger = 677 minutes

Affolter = 560 minutes

McCabe = 408 minutes (on a team with CC, Martin, and Marshall established in the backcourt)

Stewart = 360 minutes (on teams with the #2 and #4 all-time scorers in the frontcourt)

All of those players you mentioned made tremendous strides at Iowa, but all of them were already substantial contributors by their sophomore seasons.

Oh my. It's not the minutes it's the fact they didn't start until their Senior year.

Yeah, but they contributed. I think you would be hard pressed to find an example of someone who became a rotation player for the Hawks who was not at least contributing by the end of their sophomore year. I would not consider Callie to have contributed in any significant sense up to this point.

Callie's maternal grandparents are good friends of mine. They are retired teachers who both taught all 3 of my now adult kids. Truly great people! I copied and pasted your post and emailed it to them. They really appreciated your warm thoughts and encouraging words. Grandma said it brough a tear to her eyes!

Do you and all the grandparents live in Solon where Levin went to high school?

I just know Wisky has stunk forever. I haven't a clue what their roster/depth chart looks like.

I did just see on the interwebs that Audi Crooks is leaving ISU. So that all but completes the implosion that was that program good god
Wisconsin finally got a decent coach, and they improved significantly this season.

Very happy for Callie.
Lots more playing time for her, and close enough to her Solon hometown supporters, and her doting and highly supportive Oelwein grandparents, for them to see her play in person.
