Calipari: The Transfer Portal is 70% of what is wrong with college sports

Perhaps not the perfect messenger, but his points are spot on. Until the adults can get their shit together and figure out a way to manage major college athletics in a responsible way, college athletics will continue to underservice its student athletes. Most of these kids are not going pro and he is right that Universities and boosters don't look at hired guns as one of their own to take care of.

First, this isn't directed at you, I agree with the point you're making. This is about Calipari...

I'm totally in favor of limiting transfers. Let me be clear on that.

But...JC is the same as Dabo, same as Saban...

He's pissed off and white knighting because his cheat code got taken away and he doesn't have an advantage anymore. Where was his concern for players graduating back when he was...

...at Memphis cheating (Derrick Rose, his brother getting kickbacks and perks)? "I didn't do it..."

...at UMass cheating (Camby)? "I didn't do it..."

...
at Kentucky (Adebayo, Knox, Noel)? "I didn't do it..."

He must just be real unlucky to get involved in academic and recruiting cheating scandals every single place he's gone. Dude is Sgt Schultz in the flesh...I see nothing...

Did Calipari sit his one-and-doners down and tell them they should think about sticking around to graduate because even if they get drafted there's a less than 50% chance they make a career out of the NBA? I wonder if he told them they could make more money selling real estate or designing bridges than they would of they end up in Europe for 8 years.

Calipari all of a sudden "findin' Jesus" and developing morals is hilarious. Guys like him and Dabo are so deluded by their fame that they actually believe their own images of themselves.

Find a way to limit transfers somehow. Good for the game and good for players. But Calipari can GTFO, lol.

Perhaps I should not have started my OP with the word "Perhaps" :) as I agree that Calipari is a DB and hypocrit, but he aint wrong. If the transfer portal returns to a system where you get one free transfer and then you need to sit a year, it will solve so much of the dysfunction and ultimately better protects most kids from greedy agents, stupid parents, dirty coaches, and ultimately, themselves. Boosters are not going to shell out big bucks for a kid that has to sit a year.

By allowing one free transfer, you not only protect kids whose coach lied to them, or recruited over them, or just landed in the wrong spot, but you also give an opportunity to a kid that outplayed his current school and deserves a chance to show his skills at a higher level. ONCE. Unlimited free agency, however, is just pure chaos and no way to run a semi-professional sport.

The other 75% is unethical coaches who basically human traffic athletes for their own profit.

In thinking this through, here is Cal's message distilled:

"Guys, can we get some rules back in place so I can break those rules and get an unfair advantage? Hello? We need rules. There are no rules. Please. Rules. So I can break them. Please."

"How the hell am I supposed to cheat effectively if, due to the lack of transfer restrictions, the market price for players is driven so high they can afford hookers and blow themselves?"
