BS and single season scoring leaders

Pretty good context for just how good Keegan was that season, too. Especially when you consider he was also the best defensive player and best rebounder on the team. And could guard 3 or 4 positions. I think his play that season was the best of any modern Hawkeye (Lute era on).

It would be interesting to see the breakdown of % of Keegan's shots that were 2 pters. My (often distorted) memory remembers him as primarily a 3pt shooter. Also am curious as to his 3 pt shooting %.
And of course Garza's shots were almost all within 5 ft of the basket.
My sense is that Johnson, Marble & Stirtz were true '3-level' scorers -- could shoot it and drive it with equal ability.

Keegan was a great 3 level scorer. The most complete Hawkeye player of the past 50 years his sophomore season (in my opinion).

Looks like he averaged 1.9 3s on 4.7 attempts per game, for just under 40%.

24 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.3 steals, 55% shooting from the field.

Yep, it looks like my memory was faulty again -- only 6 pts/game from treyland.

Not sure if you are old enough to remember Ronnie Lester but he was tops in the era you are referring to, IMO. Keegan was very good but he didn't have the ability to lead us to a Final Four like Ronnie did. He could do it all as a point guard.

Remember him well. Great point guard super quick and fast. Too bad he got hurt when we got in final 4

Nelson was more of a shooting guard or small forward, wasn'[t her?

I never saw him play at Iowa, but I do remember him playing for the Celtics as a kid, those Wilt vs Russell years. He was 6'5" if memory serves.

I missed PG

Don Nelson was a 6’6” center for Iowa. First team BT with 3 centers, a first, Jerry Lucas (Ohio State ) Terry Dischinger (Purdue) . All three had major NBA careers.

Don was one of the best defensive players in the NBA, ever. Perfect Celtic within an unreal team. 6’6” was a decent size at that time for a college center. The other two were maybe an inch or two taller.

You can easily google the details. Fun stuff.

Yeah, his basketball career got sidetracked

In the Louisville NCAA Tournament, he was slammed to the floor by Roger Burkman, dirty vicious play

The writers are saying that his knee gave out

BullShite, he was viciously slammed to the floor, he was playing very well against Louisville who won the
National Championship a couple of game later

Don Nelson is a legendary former University of Iowa basketball standout (1959–1962) who became a 5-time NBA champion player with the Boston Celtics and a Hall of Fame coach. A two-time All-American at Iowa, he left as the school's all-time leading scorer, later famously coaching the "Nellie Ball" style and finishing with the second-most wins in NBA history

University of Iowa Career (1958–1962)
  • Stats: Nelson averaged 21.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game over three seasons with the Hawkeyes.
  • Achievements: He was a two-time All-American, All-Big Ten selection, and Team MVP.
  • Records: He graduated in 1962 as Iowa's all-time leading scorer.
He was really fun to watch: Quite a Dude

Lives in Hawaii and plays poker with Willie Nelson

In fact, when not on the road (again) Nelson hosts a weekly poker game in Maui in which folks like Owen and Luke Wilson, Woody Harrelson, the former basketball coach Don Nelson (no relation, I believe), and others participate. Last fall Owen Wilson was on Jimmy Kimmel Live talking about the game as well as sharing the painting of “Nellie’s Poker Room” by John Woodruff shown above.

Interesting. That's not how I remember it. I remember Lester getting hurt in the final 4 game against Louisville, but I dont remember anything vicious or violent about that play where he got hurt.

I was at that game. Ronnie was going up for a layup and Burkman took him out. When he came down he injured his knee. I thought it was a bad play on Burkman's part. I think we win the national championship if he is healthy all that year.

I can appreciate how special Lester was. My earliest Hawkeye memories are from a season or two after him, so I can't claim to have watched him. But I think those two elevate above the rest.

I guess my overall point was how great Keegan was his second year - he was playing at such a high level. Led the team in scoring, rebounding, blocks, steals, minutes...on and on and on. Like Lester, I think he was one of the few Iowa players who could have almost single-handedly led Iowa to a deep run in the tourney, primarily because he could control the game on both ends of the floor.

I understand he didn't in the one shot he had, but that's how it goes. He did pretty much lead Iowa to the Big Ten tournament title that season. From what I recall, he was pretty banged up (bad ankle?) for the Richmond game a few days after that BTT run. You wonder if he had been healthy, maybe Iowa's run occurs in the NCAA tourney. It was setting up pretty well for that....and makes you wonder what else would be different right now.
