My dad grew up in Dubuque, on Nevada street, north of Dodge. I've been there a bazillion times.
His dad was an attorney who occasionally associated with the elements who were running booze to and from Chicago through East Dubuque.
Dad once said one of his earliest mermories of grandpa was that he always slept with a loaded .38 under his pillow.
Hope you're carrying tonight!![]()
Good gawd, take a gun!
My wife is from East Dubuque. Her paternal grandmother was a wine and booze taster for Al Capone. I don't know if it was for fear of poisoning or another reason. Her family was in the bar business. There were false walls to hide the slot machines.
Everything you are saying is true-about the old East Dubuque. My wife is from East Dubuque. Her paternal grandmother was a wine and booze taster for Al Capone. I don't know if it was for fear of poisoning or another reason. Her family was in the bar business. There were false walls to hide the slot machines.
The false walls, the Al Capone connections, the dangerous business characters. My neighbor's Father owned one of those bars in East Dubuque's heyday and can verify all that and more (he made a small fortune himself supporting a nd participating in illegal gambling a d other shenanigans.
What was once a bubbling cauldron of thirty or so bars and half a dozen "gentleman's clubs" has been condensed to perhaps eight or ten, all locally owned and active in community philanthropy.
My spouse is a relationship manager for an iIllinois based gaming company that oversees legal gaming machines in bars and other establishments. Every Thanksgiving The Other Side makes thousands of meals for the public (for which we volunteer our services) We will also be out of there well before any troublemakers show up!
