Bruce Pearl and Jalen Rose post game

Apologies if this has already been mentioned on one of the threads, but the post game with Pearl and Rose was surreal to me. It felt like Bruce Pearl was literally in my text thread with high school buddies or sitting next to me on the couch.

There, on national TV, within minutes of the biggest Hawkeye win in decades, we had Pearl doing deep cuts from THE TEAM that has been imprinted on me forever. Yeah, we all know Marble and BJ and Horton.

But there goes Pearl, listing off Michael "Cat" Reeves, Bill "Don't Call me Clarence!" Jones, and Al "Gorilla" Lorenzen. (The manila part is sort of important but whatever). These are the names I'll always remember.

And then he calls out Bob Bowlsby. He could have just said Iowa's AD didn't renew Tom Davis in '99, but Davis decided to come back for one more ride, took them to the Sweet 16, and the curse began. No, he called him out. He said Bob Bowlsby did not renew Davis. At the point Davis was let go, Pearl had been gone from Iowa for years, but you can tell it still pisses him off. Putting aside the debate on the decision not to renew Davis, I had to smile when Pearl called out Bowlsby. Not because it was necessarily the right thing to do, but because the dude is still so passionate and loyal to the guy who gave him his break in coaching. At one point Pearl was the student manager for Mr. Davis at BC and even had to fill in as the mascot.

And here he was, nearly half a century later, using his brief time on national TV to pay his respect to the man who gave him his start and call out the guy who (in his opinion) unfairly fired him. He is loyal.

And I can't even begin to unpack the significance of the next game against Illinois, with Pearl and Rose on stage talking about 1980s Big Ten basketball.

Yeah, maybe Nebraska is a border state coached by a guy from Iowa....and if you live in Western Iowa, I get maybe there is some freaky weirdness with that fan base that is difficult for the rest of us to understand.

But they are barely even a rival yet compared to Illinois. If you have been a fan of Big Ten basketball, and specifically Iowa basketball, there is one rival. Illinois. This goes back over 100 years. If you aren't familiar, Scott Dochterman has put out some good reading on this in the past. There is a lot to process at the moment, so I'll leave it at that.

Hoiberg genuinely gives me the heebie-jeebies. I'd feel a little bad about it if he weren't both a clown and a Husker. Something about his face and mannerisms. He probably actually has some diagnosable autism-spectrum disorder but he just looks plain weird.

I saw that too. I am sure 99% of the country was bored to death as Bruce Pearl named almost every player on that 87 Iowa team. BJ Armstrong, Roy Marble, Kevin Gamble, Ed Horton, Brad Lohaus. He even named Al "The Gorilla" Lorenzen and (Bill) Jones. Jalen Rose was the only one who had any idea who Pearl was talking about. Then Pearl talked about how Iowa started 18-0 and hung 101 on Indiana, and finally talked out how Iowa blew a 16 point lead to UNLV in the elite 8 game. And of course he talked about how Bob Bowlsby let Tom Davis go after he took Iowa to sweet 16 in 1999.

I am sure what most people watching will remember is that Bruce Pearl was a 26-year old assistant on the 1987 Iowa team that made it to the elite 8. They probably zoned out after that, but what a great trip down memory lane for Iowa fans.

Or something like that. I can't remember the player's name or the details of what Pearl was actually accusing him of.

Probably not the best PR move by a young Bruce Pearl at the time. Ironic that Pearl ended up getting fired for cheating as the head coach at Tenn. Maybe it was after that phone recording when Pearl decided that cheating was ok.

While at ISU playing, out of respect for Chris Street, he wore #40. And, after the game Thursday night, he took total responsibility for 4 players on the court and put no blame on anyone but himself. I still can't stand Nebraska, but like Fred Hoiberg.

My dad grew up in Dubuque, on Nevada street, north of Dodge. I've been there a bazillion times.

His dad was an attorney who occasionally associated with the elements who were running booze to and from Chicago through East Dubuque.

Dad once said one of his earliest mermories of grandpa was that he always slept with a loaded .38 under his pillow.
