I don't have anything against the guy, but he's one of the few assistant coaches Kirk has fired. Kirk let Davis bring in a few of his guys after the first year, and I think Kirk regretted it. One more proof point that Davis didn't offer a whole lot.
I'm actually suprised by that hire. Montana is really a pretty good job, and he's bounced around a lot, always as a WR coach. Didn't really strike me as head coaching material when he was at Iowa.

Yeah, I don't think Kirk was too impressed with White or Kennedy....and didn't trust them after they weren't completely honest about that situation. And speaking of that, looks like White is now Montana's special teams coordinator.

Montana and Montana State have always been D1 since D1 football became a thing in 1978. The jump you're thinking of is going from FCS to FBS.
In college football it goes as follows in increasing levels of competitiveness...

Mon and Mon St have done quite well playing FCS/1-AA football. They probably could have easily jumped to FBS/1-A football in the 90's at the same time Boise St and Idaho jumped up to FBS/1-A . That moved worked out great for Boise but not so great for Idaho, who ultimately dropped back to FCS.
If Mon and Mon St ever want to elevate to FBS, they probably have an open invitation to the MWC waiting for them.

The issue for Kirk (rightfully so) was that Kennedy kept his conversations with Eno Benjamin below-board, and, when confronted about the issue, Kennedy wasn't exactly forthright and somewhat threw Benjamin under the bus.
Benjamin was Iowa's #1 RB target that cycle. After he committed, they informed him that they were not going to recruit any other RBs (especially since he was a highly enthusiastic recruit that was actively selling the program). As per usual with all recruits, once he committed, he was informed that it was expected that he would not visit other schools.
During that time, another commit from Texas, WR Beau Corrales, became upset when he realized that Iowa was actively recruiting players committed to other programs, and openly accused the Iowa coaches of a double-standard. He then decommitted and started bad-mouthing the program.
The controversy ended up with Benjamin taking a visit to ASU. He reportedly told Kennedy about his plan and Kennedy not only gave him the tacit go-ahead, he also withheld the information from Kirk. When the shit hit the fan, supposedly Kennedy tried to minimize his role and just dug the hole deeper.

I actually would put NJCAA ahead of NAIA for sure, and prob just above NCAA DII.

I'm still old school .... called it 1 A( Div 1 ) 1 AA ( Div 2) FBS FCS came in in like 2006 always called it DIV 1 big school Div 2 small school 
anyway Montana St, and Montana were and are probably the next school in, if they wanted to be . way more qualified than a Sacramento St.

If memory serves, I believe Eno became ASU's all time leading rusher.
That one hurt, losing him. Kennedy deserved to be fired.
I hope he learned his lessons but, in this day, and age, recruiting is greasy cesspool.
