Big ten visit

Not much insight from the Big Ten team visit. But they did say Brown was the Winner that day as Hecklinski was not good. Didn’t sound like they were very impressed with either
Going to be interesting to see how QB position goes

On the other hand, it sounds like the Defense may be rounding into form. Sounds like they certainly didn't give up 5 TD passes like they did on Kids Day.

Most encouraging was they said the DLine sounded solid, and that's been everyone's biggest concern since Day 1.

Yep, the insider guys are saying that Brown has had the better at it during practice this week. But, that is coming from the coaches who I suspect are continuing the narrative that this is a neck and neck battle to justify playing both guys in the opener and beyond.

But, the way that the BTN guys were talking, and just the general feel, its like some of us debated a couple weeks back: if you have two QBs you don't have one. Sigh. And I was so excited after Kids Day!!!!!

Concern yes. But i always expect Parker to put a good defense on the field. Biggest concern as always is QB

This doesn't sound good. One of two average QB's can't shine enough consistently to solidify the spot. Yell!
My only hope is that Brown is a practice pony and Heck is a gamer and that will get sorted out with 70,000 fans in the stands. It sort of adds up. The fans cannot fathom why KF and Lester are still contemplating going with Brown given what snippets we have seen during public performances. Brown may have the offense truly mastered and just dazzles the coaches with his execution during practice. Practice is 90% of what the coaches observe. Its almost zero of what the public sees. Maybe Lester and KF truly believe he is the most talented QB if they can just somehow get him to translate his practice performance into actual game performance? I suspect this competition lasts at least through ISU.

The QB thing decision isn't going to really be made till they play some games. Whomever plays better against ISU is how this will get decided I think. We probably won't know after week 1 that's too easy of a cupcake. I just really want it decided by the time we play Michigan and that it's obvious.

I've heard it from a couple players' mouths that Petras looked like Tom Brady in practice the entire time he was here. Like not even sarcastically. I was told he just was superhuman. But it's different when you're on TV in front of 70,000 people lining up against a B1G football team.

I think that speaks to the controlled environment of a practice. The QB is not getting hit. There is a quick whistle, and the D is mostly playing base. The offense is also going up against the scout team a lot. There is a talent gap. Practices are designed for success to breed confidence in the QB.

Let's also not gloss over that Petras had a bumbling OC that could not put together an effective game plan or call plays to save his life (except for the OSU game). I truly believe that if Lester was here 5 years ago, Petras has a different career at Iowa.

They interviewed Tim Lester. Love that guy. He didn't seem concerned at all.

We will go as far as our OLine takes us on the offensive side. We have excellent running backs and ELITE tight ends.

Seems here at iowa there is always an incredibly difficult and complex offense to learn. It takes years. At least that was the narrative until TL came along. Now, reading between the lines, I think I'm hearing it again. Could it be that the talent is just lacking?

I hope I'm wrong, I'm hoping that TL is going to develop two pretty decent quarterbacks. Then more in the future. And the narratives disapear.

The thing is he didn't have to worry about getting sacked in practice. His concrete feet failed him when he had that 2022 and 2023 OLine.

Pro style offenses are generally harder to learn than say a spread offense where the reads are simpler and the system relies more on the QBs quick read and execution.

The Shanahan offense that Lester runs is, unfortunately, pretty complex to learn. The tree routes alone present like 8 different routes that differ from which WR you line up as. The QB and all three WRs have to be on the same page. There are a lot of checks and audibles more complex than the old KOK, turn to the left and yell, turn to the right and yell, then hand the ball off one way or the other.

So, I get the learning curve. Once you have the system down, it really makes the QBs reads and checks and deliveries more simple. The defense alignment directs where the ball goes.

We have to get behind whoever it is until they fail or prove they can't lead our offense. Truthfully, I don't care right at the moment who it is. If our receivers are getting open and QB misses constantly then I will be up in arms like everybody else. We haven't had receivers that could get open in the 5 seconds or so before the pressure hits hard for last 8 years, so they are going to be a BIG factor in the QB's success. OC is going to play who HE wants not who we want. Gotta trust the system .

Lester has said repeatedly over the summer that this is the first time he's had QBs who are not brand new to the system. And that they know the offense. Maybe this year will be the year they know the offense but are not talented enough. I hope I'm wrong on that.

My comment wasn't referring to picking the starter. It more leans to what Iowa fans can expect out of the QB, regardless who gets the nod.

Petras also had crappy o-line play.

If the defense comes along and special teams are decent I’m not as worried about qb. Only reason is past seasons we managed with the likes of Hill at the helm, both qb options sound better than him with a better surrounding cast all the way around too.
