Banks declares for Draft and portal

No chance at the NBA. Why would you enter your name into the portal if you wanted to come back to Iowa if granted a 5th year.

If it's up the to the NCAA to grant another year of eligibility then he is screwed. Remember, this is Iowa.

A lawsuit has been filed by others who argue that their years of participation at the junior college level should not count against their eligibility going forward. He is waiting for the results.

From what I understand he'd have to go that route. He has no eligibility left and as of right now he is not on the roster. Not a Hawkeye, not a student there. He'd have to enter his name in the portal and get picked up by Iowa if he gets more eligibility.

The portal isn't strictly a transfer portal. The phrase "transfer" portal was just given to it by talking heads because that's what it gets used for 99.9999% of the time. It's more of an availability portal but it gets used by free agents to switch teams mostly.

Banks can't just text BMC and say, "Hey coach, I'm coming back. Get a locker cleared out for me." He has to go through the correct channel and that channel is the portal.

The student athlete who filed that lawsuit did get that eligibility back and it's been approved in the interim at least for athletes to get waivers if they used part of their eligibility at a JUCO. Very high likelihood it gets granted.

You have to declare for the draft to test the waters with pro teams from what I understand. Wieskamp did the same thing before coming back. You can opt out and go back to college if the feedback you get doesn't look promising.

People are freaking out about this online but he's doing exactly what he should be doing...making sure he can get feedback from pros on his future, and also making sure he can come back if granted another year. 100% chance Iowa staff is helping him with this and telling him how to navigate it.

Again, this is a nothingburger.

Yep. And Iowa will have earmarked a certain amount of money to give to Banks if the waiver is granted.

Yes, you declare that intent to enter the draft and assess your opportunities. That's not what I'm asking.

Why would he enter the transfer portal if he has no intention of transferring elsewhere?

A few reasons - Iowa might fill its scholarships or Iowa might spend their NIL budget before he decides to come back.

That’s basically the reason Milan for Iowa State did it. The draft process takes too long to wait out so teams move on.

It’s true. He’s declaring for the draft but leaving his options open to coming back to Iowa if he gets a 5th year and isn’t happy with his draft stock. As of this moment he has no eligibility left so he can’t be on the roster. If he comes back to Iowa it has to be through the portal.

Nothingburger.

Well, I'd like to have him back, but I was kind of thinking at the time I read it, that maybe Mac needed the roster spot for an extra portal guy. There is no way he will get drafted. No knock on him, but too much talent for 2 rounds

Yeah, I get it. Realistically, he's holding out for a 5th year. Banks is a great college player but not NBA caliber.

Not sure. Chad Liestekow did say on his podcast this week that he thought it was a long shot (to get another year of eligibility). I was a little surprised as I thought the JC guys were being granted another year in most cases. In any case, if he is denied I don't necessarily see us getting anyone else in the portal.

Bens is saying that if banks doesnt come back (not looking like it will happen) That he still looking for a guard, only a guard .
Yep he only wanted a PG, Center, and SG and he got the first two. Feel better if Banks returns since we know what we will get vs. some guard who is still out there from some smaller school who will have to prove he can do it it this conference.
