wants to take advantage of the new 5 year eligibility rule. Going to be a Hawkeye for 3 more years! That's great news for sure. Ava also was chosen for the 3/3 but declined or the Hawks would've had 2 on the team. Dani Carneigie is now playing in the 3/3 tournament.

I am probably mixed up but I thought the 5 year rule would only be applied to new incoming freshman after the rule offically passes. Everybody else gets grandfathered in under old rules.

I don't know about that. All I know is what Ava has stated.

Ok I was wrong about current players. I looked up the brand new rule.

"Currently Enrolled Athletes: For players with remaining eligibility who entered college prior to the rule change, schools have the flexibility to apply either the traditional 4-seasons-in-5-years model or the new 5-year model, whichever is most beneficial to the athlete"

This rule does not apply to players that ran out of elligibility in spring of 2026 or earlier. So Taylor McCabe, Hannah Stuelke are not elligible.

So i feel.bad for Taylor McCabe. She could have maybe got another year if they adopted this rule last year. Of course that still assumes she could rehab and get back to full health in 8 months, which I am not sure she could have done..

While many coaches saw this change coming, it has appreciably impacted high school recruiting across all sports. Nearly every player on every team this year could come back next year. Similar to the COVID season I guess, but even more widespread.

Injuries will play a part in this also. High school recruiting will still be a factor.

Hmmm...

So if every Iowa player comes back for a 5th year (not likely in the portal era), Jan is set up well with 4 empty roster spots. Enough to get 2 more players in the portal and 2 more incoming freshman. Or I guess she could recruit 4 incoming freshman and assume the portal additions and subtractions will equal 0.

Jan left schollies open this year, so yes, she has more flexibility than most. Some have speculated that she really had no minutes left to sell, so she banked a few schollies. Another factor is that women's teams typically practice against scrubby men, so they don't need the same number of practice bodies as the men do. Who knows.

My broader point is that there are going to be thousands of more eligible athletes this upcoming season, many of them experienced at the collegiate level already. That is going to have some impact on how many high school kids can be brought in across the board. The roster limits have not gone up.

Yes, Jan just needs to cross her fingers and hope there are not a lot of injuries at the same time.

Man, with this rule change Iowa is set up for a really, really good run the next three years. Things change fast in college sports these days, but Jan seems to have an awesome blend of elite talent and great, versatile role players. Now we have to see if it all fits together on the court. But on paper, it appears to be a roster that is well balanced and came to Iowa for the unique culture on the women's team. In other words, it seems like a core that Jan can possibly keep intact.

I like Iowa's shot at another final four these next three years. This might be the truly golden era of Iowa women's basketball, not just the Caitlin Clark era...man, so fun having TWO Hawkeye teams that are fun to watch throughout the winter. Like a game every other day. Let's go...

Injuries are always a risk. Ava is the only one who is not replaceable. Her injury would really, really hurt. We have decent depth most other places, especially at the wings.
