It's officially official now he has gotten in. Not a huge surprise for those keeping up with it. He's got offers out there that Iowa either can't match or shouldn't based on other needs. Iowa has log jam of 4 men anyway. Good for him though no hard feelings. He's given a generation of Hawk fans some memories we'll never forget

Not shocked and suspect something known by coaches before Illannoy game. Nothing else can explain the slight he got that game.

He played 9 mins was 0-2 with 2 TOs and made multiple defensive mistakes. I trust the coaches decision on that. Alvaro had been a yo yo all season with his play. That's part of the reason losing him isn't the end of the world. Kid was inconsistent all yr and that's a pet peeve of McCollums. If he had been halfway consistent all yr with playing as well as he's capable of he woulda been starting.

It sounds like Ben told him to take what we're offering or look elsewhere because we have needs and we don't have enough money to get top quality guys (PG, C, SG) and keep him, a non-starter that averaged 8 pts and 3 RB's, at an increased price. I don't think it would be anything negative, but a business decision on both parts. Can't blame either party for this decision. A wise decision on both sides.

Ben sat him for a reason, he wasn't playing well. If he was actively shopping himself during the tourney or letting it take away from his focus, I don't blame Ben for saying goodbye. Most likely just a matter of NIL economics.
The guy hit a couple of the biggest shots in recent Hawkeye ball history and I'd love to see him back in black and gold. But let's be honest, they were a byproduct of defensive mistakes or pressure overplays. He benefited from being the guy on the backend. Somebody will overpay because of those optics. Others will pass because they'll look at the overall picture, he was up and down a lot.
Given the chance for an extra Million$ or so at age 21 would be hard to pass up. Hope he does well.

I'm completely speculating but I'd guess McCollum said the Hawks would take him back but at a price well below his $2M from this past season (absolutely blind guess but maybe the Hawks offered $1M or even $1.2M). And at the same time, Folgueiras tests the market, potentially visiting with a couple coaches in person (hence why flying through O'Hare). And he gets offers well above what Iowa floated...but McCollum doesn't budge. Says this is the offer, you have until 8 am Wednesday to sign.
It's a crazy world, but I think that's how you have to approach it. Quickly assign a market value to everyone on your roster, assess the free agent market, know your priorities, and don't overpay.

First priority is clear to me. Make reasonably sure this is the only transfer, because we really need the rest of the guys to stay. Spend the rest, whatever that is, to attract a point guard and a true 5. Go down a level if necessary.
As to Folguerias, I am glad we had him this year. But if he was biting too deep on NIL, I would not spend the $$. Consistency or at least solid growth. I saw neither.

I'm so glad that Ben is able to make these sort of difficult decisions. Cause it can't be fun to do when sitting down with the kid to go over all this. I'm saying this not knowing if that's how this went either. Maybe it was more Alvaros decision then Bens too. Regardless he's a good kid and I really hope nobody is upset with him for this. So long as he doesn't go to Nebraska anyway...

Be nice to pay afterward based on performance. Make them work for it first lol. He has potential to be a bit more strengthened and become a starter with better and consistently solid numbers but will he put in the work or not? They know better about his work ethic and the chances/probability that he reaches his full potential or not. He looks like a risky prop more than a sure thing so you'd only go so high on the $$ with him.

Same thing happened with Banks he was a monster that one game and didn't match up well (and didn't play much) in the other. Just coaching descisions
Charted Alvaro's season. The blue is points, the green rebounds and the gold is minutes. This graph shows the inconsistency from game to game, but production seemed fairly consistent with minutes. In the first three NCAA tourney games he was always in the top 3 scorers, then didn't score against Illinois.Banks gets into foul trouble BUT, effort is always there. Good defender and rebounder. If he stays, I'd like to see his avg.ppg go up from 10.2 to somewhere around 14-16pts. I'd like to see him more assertive on offense. More 3pt attempts.
This makes zero sense. What you are basically suggesting is that Ben would rather hold a grudge than win an Elite 8 game.
Yeah it happens. Coaches go with the flow of a game sometimes. Ben isn't afraid to make tough decisions like that knowing it might hurt a kids feelings. That's where recruiting comes into play and really knowing who you have. Ben doesn't want moody guys who'll get all kinds of butt hurt over that. He'll give you more chances but within the game itself he's gonna do what he thinks is going to win that game.
