What 3 KF era WRs would you want to have on your team for one season.

McNutt, DJK, and Tevaun Smith if I had to pick 3 guys regardless of their team results, usage, etc. TS was criminally underutilized. Way better than Ragaini who’s higher up on the list.

Matt Vandeberg gets the lunch pail guy award. He’s way down the list in talent, but his performance to attention ratio is the highest by far. He was just always Rock Steady Eddie out there and got it done when his number was called.
Yup him and Brandon Smith should file charges against BF for how they weren't used nearly as much as they should've.

My 3 would be McNutt, DJK and Kasper and I really didn't have to think really hard about it

If we make the stop to win the Big Ten title game in ‘15, Tevaun is gonna be #3 on most people’s list at because his 85 yard trip to the house earlier on becomes right up there with Holloway’s. It still wouldn’t be as cool as Holloway’s but it would’ve been the most meaningful.

Tevaun Smith was pre-BF, he will be suing Greg Davis.

I think we should take a moment to appreciate that we once had a WR who put up a season like this:

I included K. Davis, as well, because as a distant 2nd option, he still put up more yards than any receiver we have trotted out there since 2019 (ISM had 722 yards in 2019).

As a matter of fact, our ENTIRE WR ROOM put up the following total over a 3 year stretch:

2022: 796 yards
2023: 754 yards
2024: 1,101 yards

KF era while KOK was OC (1999 - 2011):
13 seasons

10 different WR topped 700 yards in a season (Kasper, K. Hill, M. Brown, Solomon, Hinkel, Brodell, DJK, McNutt, K. Davis, MVB)

3 WR topped 700 yards in multiple seasons (Solomon, DJK, McNutt), so there were 13 instances of a 700-yard season by a WR

There were 3 different seasons with 2 WR above 700 yards (2004 with Solomon and Hinkel; 2010 with McNutt and DJK; 2011 with McNutt and K. Davis)

KF era post-KOK as OC (2012 - 2025):
14 seasons

1 WR has topped 700 yards in a season (ISM in 2019 with 722 yards)

The first 2 years of the KF era are hard to judge because they threw a million bubble screens. They had to because the o-line had 260 lbs., 270 lbs. guys on it. Not a dig on Kasper because he was a freak athlete, but of Kasper’s 157 receptions…120 of them felt like bubble screens.

That said I would agree with @Hawkfnntn…McNutt, DJK and Kasper would be my choices as well.

Wow! Very interesting. So, talent difference? Coaching? Offensive system?

KOK was a play action pass type of guy, with a vertical passing game. He like to go over the top to straight line (usually taller) WRs. He also was pretty good at developing QBs. His passing game was effective. He also tended to a have a smaller rotation at WR.

Davis' passing system used the RBs more and a lot more shorter and horizontal type passing. He did not stretch the field.

BF was an incompetent ass clown as an OC. Nuff said.

Lester is still picking up the pieces, but his system is closer to Davis' than it is to KOK. West Coast. He wants to use the WRs more, but he has not had a QB that could throw all that well yet. Time will tell.

Quite possibly yeah. Smith had the potential to have been used as a number 1 guy way more. I was at the game when he caught the one handed TD in the corner from Rudock. He had a hell of a catch radius and just knew how to get open.

The thing about comparing them is Kaspers SR yr was just about what Smith had for his entire career stats wise. And Kasper had a pretty dang good Jr yr too. Just tough for me to overlook what Kasper did with absolute nobodies for QBs.

He had Kyle Mccann and Jon Beuitjer as his Qbs mostly too they weren't exactly able to stretch the field with their arms. Kasper went on to play like 7 or 8 yrs in the NFL I think he showed he wasn't just that type of WR he just couldn't control the play calling. He was that 2000 teams main receiving weapon and was tough to stop.

Yeah, he got labeled more as a workout warrior than a freak athlete and/or football player. That wasn’t the case…he was legit.

Sean Considine and Kasper felt like they played on every NFL team for a decade. Always had to check to see what team they were on.

I forgot Considine got a ring.

That would be a cool topic for a thread, all Hawks who ever got a ring, whether they were everyday dudes or bench riders.

When I was looking at Kasper's NFL stats, there was one season that was just listed as "3 teams."

I remember from KOK is he was not afraid to go deep and it seemed more deep throws were posts and seams rather than what we have seen the last few years which are more sideline routes when we actually threw deep. We also ran a lot more screens of different varieties with wrinkles off those screens.

Yes and he mixed in those deep crossing routes on play actions. Stanzi and McNutt hit on a few of them that one against Indiana was awesome where McNutt took it to the house

Seems we had a variety of opinions on the skill positions, so I created a poll to try to find consensus. Please vote!

I only voted for two because Jon Filloon wasn't on the list.
He will always be my amongst my favorite Hawkeyes. Sometimes there's just a guy who does the job quietly without gaudy numbers. But nonetheless, a critical player. I like to champion those players. And, his numbers actually show it.

Sure, he only averaged a little under 300 yards per season.
Less than 20 catches per season.

But averaging 14 yards per reception? My recollection of my fandom of him was (and still today), is that a lot of those 20 receptions per season were critical drive saving/extending receptions. I remember thinking how he was good for rescuing Matt Rodgers at least once or twice per game. I could be wrong. I tend to overvalue Rex Hudler's contribution to the Cardinals. But I don't let facts get in the way of my emotions when it comes to picking favorites. I'm picking who I want and you can't stop me.
