What 3 KF era WRs would you want to have on your team for one season.

We have to have something to do until spring football provides some interested. This topic (all-KF era team) pops up periodically, but it is always good for a revisit. Let's start with WR.

If you could line up with any 3 WR from the KF era, who would they be? Not necessarily just the best 3, because they also have to compliment one another. I have my 3 in mind, but who ya got?

Marvin McNutt is the obvious one everyone is going to agree on.

DJK and ISM were probably the best athletes.

Hinkel was probably the best possession reliever with KMM worth mentioning.

Kasper probably had the best speed but others were fast too.

Akrum Wadley was probably the best reciever out of the backfield but I guess I will save that for the RB discussion.

I guess my final 3 would be
McNutt
DJK
Hinkel

McNutt, DJK, and Tevaun Smith if I had to pick 3 guys regardless of their team results, usage, etc. TS was criminally underutilized. Way better than Ragaini who’s higher up on the list.

Matt Vandeberg gets the lunch pail guy award. He’s way down the list in talent, but his performance to attention ratio is the highest by far. He was just always Rock Steady Eddie out there and got it done when his number was called.

A healthy Maurice Brown would be in the mix.
I like this pick. Underrated and mostly forgotten about because he came at the beginning of the KF era.

For my top three I would go Marvin McNutt, Clinton Solomon and Kevin Kasper. Honorable mentions to Maurice Brown and Ed Hinkel.

if I remember correctly didn’t TS struggle staying healthy? I thought almost every year he missed several games it seemed. I agree if health He are Mo Brown would be my third with DJK and McNutt

And MVB ended up getting the hot chick too.

Wasn't he the guy that proposed marriage on the football field or something like that?

Edit: Yup found it

Yeah! I remember this. His wife does a good job of representing Iowa sports. They have a new baby and do some podcast work.

Similar, but I would replace DJK with ISM. More explosive, one of the few receivers we have had that truly put the fear of God into a defense. He did what he did with a BF-offense, so bonus points.

I think MVB was actually a pretty explosive athlete, pre foot injury. He would be on my "what could have been" team.

Kevin Kasper still holds the NFL combine record for the 20m shuttle.

That was the toughest choice for me DJK or ISM. ISM could have stayed another year since his last year was the COVID year. He could have cemented his legacy if he would have returned in 2021.

This has been Kirk's weakest position group by far.

Last I checked, in his entire head-coaching career at Iowa, he has only had two WRs catch a pass in a regular season NFL game: Kasper and ISM, and Kasper wasn't recruited by him. They overlapped for two seasons.

That's an astounding statistic. Over 26 years, you would think there would be at least a few more just by sheer luck.

I'm going to go against the grain a little here. Combining route-running, hands and explosiveness I'd go with:

DJK
Reece Vander Zee
Kaden Wetjen (slot)

McNutt had a knack for using his body and had good strong hands, but, even with such limited exposure, I think Vander Zee has better hands with similar size, and is uber-reliable in those "50-50" balls. He needs to get stronger, but I see some Jordy Nelson/Joe Jurevicius in him. We haven't seen the best of him yet.

When DJK was in a good mental space, he was easily the most talented WR Kirk has had.

With Wetjen, there is a "proper usage" caveat. Don't be shocked if he carves out a Braxton Berrios-type role in the NFL. He edges out ISM for me.

Charlie Jones falls into the category of wildly underused by KF's dopey kid. He was one of the best returners in the game and Iowa had no playmakers on offense and yet he was barely targeted on offense. Then he goes to Purdue and catches 110 balls?? 12 TDS? Just given his track record, I am taking him in the slot over KW.

McNutt and DJK for sure. Both ballers.

I think you are thinking of Kevin Kasper (8 NFL seasons, 24 receptions), not Ed Hinkel. I don't think Hinkel ever played in an NFL game. Also, Kasper overlapped 2 seasons with KF, Hinkel (2002-2005) was entirely under KF.

There is a chance Brandon Smith could be added to our list of WRs with an NFL catch. He played in 2 games last year for the mighty Jets, and he got 8 NFL snaps. So, still hanging around, it could happen!

This is your thread, Buster.

Start the next position post...

Yes, Kasper. Must have had Hinkel in my head for some reason.
