After an excellent 1st Round at the NCAAs, the Hawks do it again in the 2nd Round.

After winning 8 of 9 matches in the 1st Round, with 6 bonus point matches, the Hawks followed it up with another excellent 2nd Round, winning 7 of 8, with two Tech Falls.

125: #8 Peterson defeated the #9 seed...4-1.

133: #6 Ayala Tech Falled the #11 seed...19-4.

141: #7 Bailey defeated the #10 seed....11-5.

149: #15 Block lost to the #2 seed....6-10.

165: #3 Caliendo Tech Falled the #19 seed....20-5.

174: #5 Kennedy defeated the #12 seed....2-1.

184: #7 Ferrari defeated the #10 seed....10-6.

Hwt: #8 Kueter defeated the #9 seed from Penn State....4-0.
______

In the Consolation Bracket, at 197: #27 Arnold defeated the #22 seed....7-2.

So all 9 Iowa guys are still alive. 7 guys advance to the Quarterfinals Friday morning, but only 1 of them will be favored.

Iowa State is having a disappointing tourney thus far, and all the team contenders for 2nd place have had at least one of their Top 5 seeded guys lose, which is allowing the Hawks to hang in there. Biggest upset thus far was Iowa State's #2-ranked Hwt losing.

(I'll move this over here from the other thread)

Fairly solid overall.

I'm starting to wonder if something is going on with Block.

First, he had #1 in the country beat in the B1Gs, then somehow found a way to lose with simple mental mistakes.

In the late session yesterday, he was right there with the #2 seed, then gives up a TD from a mile away that sealed the match. He just stood there and didn't even react until the guy was in on the ankle.

Block has a ton of natural talent, but something above the shoulders is holding him back.

125 - Peterson is gonna end up wrestling #3 Bouzakis right after losing to Lilledahl. Bad luck there so the points at 125 are done.

133 - Ayala likely runs into Byrd after Blaze if he loses, which sucks because he's struggled more with Byrd in the past. This is what I meant in the other thread when I said the wrestle backs are brutal. You can lose a close match and end up with an even tougher one next.

141 - If Bailey loses to Vega which he likely will, the consi bracket is pretty soft. Might get a few points.

149 - Block should win his first one but runs into Stiles. Gonna be a one and done and a couple points at 49 I'm thinking.

157 - Nothing at 57 obviously.

165 - Caliendo should get bonus this morning but then runs into the other Blaze which hasn't gone well lately. If he wins that one it's gonna be a steamroll for 2nd place by Mesenbrink, if he loses it there's a long row to hoe for 3rd. Arajuo is the biggest threat right now in the consi's IMO.

174 - Not seeing Kennedy beat Kharchla, and then it's Ruiz next in consi's. Ruiz isn't gonna get beat twice. Done at 174 unfortunately.

184 - Best chance Iowa has remaining for some points. If he gets beat by Sinclair which is likely, he should win a few in the wrestlebacks. If he wins, there's more reasonable competition left in the top side than at 65.

197 - Hawks are cooked.

HWT - Hawks are semi-cooked. Even if Keuter wins a couple in the wrestle backs he's going to run into Either Trumble or Ghadiali. Both those guys are offensive wrestlers who score a lot and we all know...well...yeeeaaahhhh. Ben doesn't like takedowns to put it nicely.

Yeah, maybe. But Bouzakis looked like shit and may just bail out, and Ayala beat Byrd at the BTens.
I don't see anybody beating Caliendo in this tourney other than Mesenbrink.

If Peterson beats Bouzakis it's either Spratley who he got manhandled by in Stillwater or the Seymour kid from Lehigh. Rough.

Ayala beat Byrd in the B1Gs, but also got his ass kicked by him earlier this year, 2-3 vs Byrd in his career, seems to have his number for some reason. To me that one is a toss-up at best. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Blaze and Caliendo are also a toss-up, that's his only loss this year and it wasn't a competitive match. Was hoping Blaze and Ruiz were switched around in different halves of the brackets. I think he walks through Ruiz if that's the case

Going to be a tough Quarterfinals.
Mikey will advance with ease.
Angelo has a chance to advance.
Kennedy will do Kennedy things and lose
Kueter- nuff said he is toast.

Ayala and Bailey were defensive minded only.
Pedersen was impressive just came up short.

And Arnold won his 2nd Round Consolation match.

So, after the Quarters and 2nd Round Consolations, all 9 Iowa guys still alive.

Hard to think of any Iowa wrestler over the years who has done more with fewer physical tools than Kennedy. Waited his turn, now will be a 2-time All American. He's lost so many of those tough matches, but he's won his share too. Thrilled for him to be make the semis...dude has worked his ass off.

Was pretty unimpressed with the #2 seeded 184 lber that Ferrari beat. Dude was in on a single leg not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, but SIX TIMES....and got nothing out of it. Don't see that very often. Anybody know what's going on with Ferrari's shoulders and the bandages? Is surgery coming after the season ends?

Have to say, I didn't see Iowa getting 3 guys into the semis. Hawks hangin' in there!

In addition to Iowa's 3 semifinalists, things are shaping up nicely for the 6 Hawks in the Blood Round.

Bousukis got beat, and Ayala avoids Byrd. Therefore...

The Hawks will be favored in 4 of the 6 Blood Round matches, and Block and Arnold's matches are very winnable. It's literally possible the Hawks could end up with 9 All Americans, which would be beyond surprising.

So, the Hawks ended up doing better than most of us thought they would at this NCAA tourney.

Iowa will end up with 7 All Americans, the most since the 2020-21 season. Iowa's streak of 36 consecutive years with a finalist will continue, with Caliendo avenging an earlier defeat to Blase in dramatic fashion.

Raise your hand if you expected #15 seeded Block to be an All American.
Raise your hand if you expected #27 seeded Arnold to be an All American.
Yep. Nobody. It's why they wrestle the matches.

Great to see Ayala not only win in the Blood Round, but also then beat Byrd again in the next round, so he'll finish no worse than 6th. (Byrd went from winning it all last year I think, to no better than 7th this season -- that weight was a gauntlet.)

After winning in the Blood Round, Block also won his next match, beating #8 Swiderski from Okie St., and and will finish no worse than 6th.

After getting nailed with a potentially losing stall call with 19 seconds remaining in the Blood Round, Kueter scored a TD with 5 seconds remaining to become an All American, then won his next match 7-0, so he'll finish no lower than 6th.

And Kennedy and Ferrari still alive after losing in the semis.

Great to see Ayala, Caliendo, and Arnold let loose with some great emotion after a long season!

Hawks are hanging in there with the team race -- likely headed toward a 5th place finish, just shy of a trophy.
A shocking collapse by Iowa State and Michigan.

I picked 7th place and still would if I was picking again. It’s where I thought it would shake out. So they outperformed my expectations somewhat.

However, I can’t get excited about it in the least. Right or wrong it’s not what I’m used to growing up smack dab in the Gable era and a long time season ticket holder. There’s no way I’m ever get pumped up about a team finishing fifth instead of seventh…I just don’t see any possible way to get interested in that.

What I will do is follow the interesting individual stories for all teams, unfortunately Iowa doesn’t really have any.

Happy they got Six A.A. s But no Champs.
lookin for 4th or 5th in the team standings.

Hope Iowa State gets a Champ.

Sorry Seven A.A.s, pretty good considering what everyone was thinking, including me, and we still have a chance to get 4th and be on the Podium.

Wasn’t terrible for the Hawks but they’re a long way behind the likes of PSU and OKST. Wonder if Ferrari stays or not and how bad does next year look either way?
