Aaron Graves Return?

Graves also has a wife and kid. Not saying he's a dummy and can't manage a family on $13K a week which is about $12.5K more than I started out with one, but if he can bank a mil for a year at Iowa I'd think that would be appealing. It's not like it wouldn't also help his prospects going forward if he can stay healthy.

how did you arive at a $1 million ?

I don't think it would take a million. Less than half that. I am assuming Graves knows he has a tenuous shot at sticking on the practice squad as a developmental guy. If injuries happen, maybe something breaks his way and he is elevated for parts of the season. The money gets better then. Just as likely he gets cut altogether.

I am assuming he did not move his wife and kid all the way to Baltimore on the off chance he makes the team. He probably is in cheap team living with his family visiting. If he can get a 400k offer to return home and play for Iowa, he has a nice salary for the year, can keep some stability for his family in a place he knows, and he always can take another shot at the NFL next year.

This actually makes a ton of sense for both sides, which is why it will probably never happen.

I listened to a rather extensive commentary on this topic today on Full Ride (sirius ch 84)...Bobby Carpenter and Rick Neuheisel.

Their take was the NFL is going to step in and squash this. Probably through Congress.

Reason is simple....roster management for the NFL teams would be a nightmare considering teams "wasting" a draft pick for example on a person who goes back to school as it disrupts a salary cap, etc.

Interesting times for sure.
I would think it'd have to come from the NCAA side and the schools just not bringing them back. Not all schools would have open spots or $ for them anyway. It's just an odd time of yr to be shuffling things for schools as a couple weeks before the season and all.

The NFL side I can't see how they could prevent someone leaving at anytime though. I guess it's a breach of contract sort of situation from their angle. But do they really want to go litigate all of those individuals? It's certainly a mess. I'm not sure how it'll get cleaned up

There is nothing the NFL can do if Graves wants to leave. He is under an UDRFA contract yes, but I would be flabergasted if it covered this type of scenario. The reality is that Graves is about to be cut from the Ravens anyway. He may be offered a spot on the PS, but again, these are not indentured servants. If he wants to spurn a PS spot and go play in Canada or Arena league or college, he is a free agent.

Now, if the NFL wants to throw its weight behind what Congress is trying to do to bring order to college eligibility and pay rules, I am all for that. We need rules.

Exactly. ATM their doesn't seem to be any. It almost doesn't matter what the rules end up being just have some in regards to who's eligible to do what and when can they do it and stick to it

The NCAA is just a private company. It can try to make rules, but courts can just overrule them to help their local teams. If Congress sets the rules or gives the NCAA limited authority to set its rules without antitrust or NLRB limitations, courts will be more constrained. Frankly, I think any legislation should require all legal challenges to be filed in federal court with an assigned panel of judges, to stop this ridiculous hometowning.

This story definitely has legs, but it's hard to see it happening.

If Aaron is cut, depending upon the waiver pick up order at the moment, any number of teams could assign him to a PS. Now, practice squads are very fluid and your spot is always tenuous, BUT, it affords you the chance to be plucked and signed to an active roster across the league on a moment's notice. That generally means a very nice contract for at least the remainder of the season (you could still get cut, but the signing bonus and any guaranteed money is yours).

It really kind of boils down to whether Aaron and his family prioritize financial stability for a season at Iowa, or would rather take the gamble that being on a PS will provide a path to an active roster.

Yeah, my buddies and I were spit balling over texts and landed on $500k. I think at that point it'd really come down to what he wants to do. Some guys might jump at getting a shot to go back. Others might have their toes curl - like he has mentally moved on and is excited with his new life in the NFL, even if it means practice squads and chasing roster spots. Hard to know, probably plenty of guys feel each way.

Liestikow has said twice now separately that there’s no smoke to this and it’s not going to happen

Logan Jones could have went to NFL a year earlier but wanted to be a Hawk one more year. I'd say he DID improve his draft stock pretty well, but that'd be the attitude Graves would need to come back

I didn't put in much stock in graves coming back while watching the following pod cast but what I did enjoy was listening to David Eickholt talk about the over all status of this year's team possibilities and how they could do.

Honestly as the season has been approaching since last year I have just wondered how the QB situation would work out but I couldn't really see a great team for this year in football. especially with the schedule.

After watching several YouTube video's and listening to David Eickholt in this podcast with "Locked on Hawkeye's" it has me re-evaluating the team with a little more hope rather than just a "meh" attitude.

I am still looking forward with a more serious interest to the basketball season. I am concerned somewhat with the special teams comments in the podcast. How many games has Iowa pulled out due to special team play. They cannot be poor in special teams and honestly have a change to upset a Michigan squad on their home field.

As the board lawyer here, what the 10th Circuit did was block an order allowing any player to return in Graves situation. In other words, nationwide permission to go back to school was withdrawn. What the 10th did not, and could not really do, is block kids from doing this. The Lousiana judge's ruling still stands and those guys are on campuses. I read that a kid who played at Missouri got a TRO and has joined Kentucky. So, as long as you can find a hometown state court judge, you can still lawyer your way into this.

I listened to LockedOn podcast Friday and they reported that Iowa did call Graves' agent. This still could happen. He is obviously in playing shape and knows the system. He could fly to IC tomorrow and be ready to be a starter. That all said, this doesn't feel like a very Iowa thing to do. But, all you need is a half mill in cash, a plugged in lawyer, and the will to make it happen. Come home, Aaron!!!!!!

How do we think the conversations amongst the coaches for this are going? KF has to be like what in the ever loving F is going on. As a fan I see that our DT position is certainly lacking and Graves is an absolute stud. So why not no skin off our back if they did it. My guess is this is a Tyler Barnes thing. He's probably who did the reaching out to Graves agent.

This would be Iowa's luck. Iowa would be the only BIG team to have someone come back like this. And like 10 weeks in the courts make him ineligible and the NCAA says all games played with him in are forfeited.

It wouldn't likely work that way. You generally cannot get in trouble by relying upon a court order. The orders usually say that the NCAA cannot retaliate or threaten to retaliate if the order is overturned by an appellate court. By time that would happen, the season is usually over. That's why its so hard for the NCAA to keep things uniform. A hometown judge issues an order, the NCAA has to follow it, and by the time it gets reversed the bell has been rung.

I don't think it is too hyperbolic to say that Graves return could be the difference between 8-4 and 10-2. Most of us think the offense is going to be pretty good this year. Special teams is a concern, but I think we will be fine on punting and maybe shaky field goal kicking leads to Riverboat Gambling Kirk to return. The worry is the defense, and specifically the interior DL. But, you throw in an all conference guy who has been getting bigger, better and stronger in an NFL camp, pair him with Hawthorne and some DE that have a lot of raw talent, and suddenly DL is looking pretty salty. LBs are talented and deep. And in Parker I trust in the secondary. I have never donated to NIL causes, but I would throw some cash in the pot to get Graves back into the fold.

Part of me would love to have Graves back. Who wouldn't? That is a no brainer. But there's also a part of me that wishes all of the madness with these lawsuits would just end. I don't like it at all. I hope Congress can pass the law that gives the NCAA the teeth it needs to prevent these frivolous lawsuits.

Yeah, I don't put too much stock in what Chad has said on this. There is no benefit to having speculation out there. So pretty easy for someone in the program to merely tell him "no real legs to this."

I think there are very, very few scenarios in which Kirk would consider this. But I think this might be one of them.
