A Little 'Spect...

Hopefully, Kirk’s successor embraces everything that guy just said. In my lifetime Iowa has always been a developmental program, and it needs to be that way moving forward. Catching lightning in a bottle the way Indiana did is not realistic.

BG when she makes the hire better understand that. I think she does, but you never know, tho.

Indiana had a good solid coach before this last one. If they would have just kept their last coach for 27 years they would never have had lightening nor a bottle.

Do we want to be known as the likable football program? That generally means you’re not a threat to their football program or a hindrance to any aspersions they or their fans have. Instead those programs that are an hinderance end up being hated.

You have to be realistic. Wisconsin and Nebraska are perfect examples of what happens when you lose your identity.

I don't need a national title.
I can live without one.
It would be nice. Thrilling. But I want to be entertained. I do want a crack at a conference title somewhat frequently. And the equivalent of a Rose Bowl or BCS type thing every now and then. And I wanna beat ISU and Iowa State.

But again, I wouldn't trade Iowa's performance over the last 37 years I have been a fan with all but a handful of programs. And that list of programs grows shorter every year.

Nebraska fell off that list since I've been a Hawk fan.
Wisconsin has fallen off the list in the last few years, even during this time of anemic Iowa offenses.
Michigan was on the bubble there until they started cheating.
Penn State? Iowa beats them as much as they beat the Hawks.
Miami has fallen off the list.
Florida.
Florida State?
Not sure they were ever there, but Notre Dame's results don't excite me.
And one or two good years from any of them won't convince me to put them back on the list.

That basically leaves Alabama, Georgia, OSU, Auburn, Texas(ish), LSU(ish)

You could throw a few kinda on the bubble. USC, national title-less Oregon, and the like. Maybe that's where Florida State belong.

I absolutely covet Indiana's bright shining moment last year. But the frequent abject misery I'd have had to endure along the way? And let's just see how the next few years play out.

Who's our richest alumni?? we need to petition them
Isn't the past owner's of the "Kum and Do" convenience stores and the past owners of the Chicago Bull's Hawkeye supporters"

Well maybe we will be all right as I feel the QB position is vital to this season and we are in much better hands with Lester on board.

I dunno that he was even close to the richest but he was being compensated at a value comparable to $10 million a year. Doesn't matter anyhoo, he was shot down by a guy who has a name synonymous with Nintendo video games.

You can remove my name from the short list ...

Do they still sell that Swarm beer?
I made sure to buy some every time I was in town.
That's about the best I can do. Hell, the university alumni office doesn't even call me the Sunday after a big Hawk victory thinking that my exuberance hangover with all sorts of dopamine still swimming around my brain will trigger me to donate to the J-School. I swear, they would instruct those kids making the calls to chat with you and get you reminiscing so they can tick boxes like "loved going to Hancher", "Big football fan" "was in multiple student groups" so they can leverage that against you.

They haven't called in years. Someone must've finally ticked the box that says "forget this guy, he never donates". I bet they start hitting me up though at say age 65, on the off chance I made something big with my life and somehow made enough bread to build a new hospital or something.

I don't think Swarm is around anymore. But you can still support the Hawkeyes by buying Tigerhawk. It is a pilsner made by Big Grove. A portion of the proceeds go to the U of I Athletics. And, it is quite good!

Big Grove in Iowa City underwhelms me in every way, except atmosphere.
Parking sucks. Beer and food are meh.

Won't stop me from going there with a big group to watch a game. Not sure you find too many better places, especially with a large group.

But just underwhelmed by their beer and food every time.

What I meant was the list of mega-rich Iowa alums that potentially could pour millions into the NIL pot, a la, Cuban, etc.

I don't think we have a giant billionaire type like that you would have heard of. Bill Kraus founded Kum and Go and yes, gave a lot, but that dude didn't have Cuban money. I think it is more of a compilation of a lot of incredibly wealthy farmers, ag guys, business owners. The closest comparison is what, Ashtun Kutcher, but that dude is worth a couple hundred mil and I don't know that he is an athletic booster of note.

As others have mentioned in other posts, Cuban sort of jumped on the Cig bandwagon, but wasn't a driving force behind Indiana's NIL success. Indiana has one of the best business schools in the country and has produced a lot of executives and business owners over the decades.
