Definitely wasn’t expecting anything wild like Oregon’s court and that would have been much more disappointing. The 22 works. Just really wish they’d put Streets name on the court. Mediacom can have the shot clocks. They probably wouldn’t give it up even if it was brought up.

forget the new basketball floor. Fix the g** d*** arena. Dig out and lower the floor 5 feet, bring the seats in tighter. End of discussion.

Agree completely. Was my first mention in this thread. If people aren’t closer none of it matters.

The ultimate issue with Carver is that it is in between historic and new and probably will never fill that gap. You take rusty pipes and some decay and lack of luxury if you are in Phog Allen, or Assembly or Cameron. You accept the dust because of the tradition and history. Carver has some good history, but not great history. It was a formidable place in the 80s and 90s, but it just isn't old enough and Iowa MBB wasn't quite good enough to want to accept the outdated nature of the arena. So, you either need to knock it down and build a new one, or you do what they did at Wrigley and completely gut and redo the stadium to bring it up to snuff. 70 million aint enough. But, I guess if you are Beth you just have to do what you can. A relatively modest renovation is better than nothing, and certainly more than her predecessor ever figured out.

I'm curious if you or others have the opinion that athletic directors (Beth included) might be a bit conservative right now due to the volatility of college sports, finance, TV, NIL, etc? I tend to think that MAYBE athletic departments are a little cautious right now, but I'm not sure.

Interesting take. One plan floated way back was to build a basketball-only arena on the footprint of the Old Capitol Center, which could have been really cool. There are too many University offices in that space now. Certain departments would go apoplectic if they got kicked out of that space for a sports facility. Wouldn't it be cool to go to the ped mall before and after a big game? I'm sure the city would hate it too because of the traffic and parking chaos it would create.

I worked for the university for 30 years until a couple years ago. It's very easy for departments to move in and out of spaces. I actually had my department and offices in the Old Cap Mall on 2nd floor. Actually, within the last few months I had heard they finally moved that total department out of the mall completely. They'd had some DEI offices that came in an now gone so it can change rather fast as long as space is found to house offices/departments elsewhere. That's gotten to be an easier option after COVID with all the remote work.

So, it wouldn't take too much to move all the departments out of there. I think IT prob has the most space in the Old Cap Building. That would be the perfect spot for an on campus arena where the students could easily get to from their dorms and apartments/homes. One would still have to question if there would be enough space as it prob takes more acres than one thinks, especially to accommodate some parking.

The locations would be ideal, now would there be enough room to pull it off. Dunno.
