5th year eligibility

With the news that thousands of athletes have been granted a 5th year of eligibility, it makes me wonder if Hannah and Tayllor might be part of it.

I could see Taylor playing a role with her 3 shot. Bit I know she tore her ACL and have no idea how that has come along. Chances are that thinking her career was over she didn't really rehab like she was going to play again might have slowed her up. Just a thought but if healthy she could contribute, IMO.

Hannah might be a different story. If she came back, would she fit in with this return to the 4and1 style the team is returning to? I think her playing in Italy and working on her overall game might be the best course of action for her. But she was such a Hawkeye warrior, if she really wanted to come back they would work something out.

I believe I read where Ella Stromdahl stayed in Sweden for the summer and possible played on a national team. Still coming in August will work against her for this coming year I'd think and she will be a project to come along at her own speed.

It seems to me this team could still use a player or two.

It's quite the pandoras box the courts have opened up. Stuelke it sounds like is going to go over seas and play pro ball.

McCabe I haven't seen anything on other then she's at Notre Dame coaching as a GA I believe. Hard to say what she'd like to do. But it's not just them there's a nation full of others and Jan has like 4 open schollys available.... Wonder what she'll do as far as aggressively pursuing any of em

Its kinda a delimna for McCabe because with the type of injury she had, I am guessing she could use a full year off to recover and get healthy. But by that time her 5th year will be almost over. My understanding of the new 5th year rule is you get 5 total years and that's it. No nornal redshirts and no medical redshirts to get a 6th year.

So if she did come back to play, she may not be ready until February and may still not at 100%. I honestly don't know how her recovery is going, that's just a guess based on others who have the same injury. But even then it might still be worth it. A chance to finish her career right playing in one final NCAA tourney. Maybe she's moved on and considers that part of her life done. No idea honestly.

I'd think there'd be a least a couple players out there that would jump at the chance to add some depth to the roster and wouldn't care about NIL.

You might be right on this. But, they basically had this situation before when they added the D3 transfer. She was unusual in that she didn't care about NIL or even playing time. I think those players are rare in today's game. And what would it do to the chemistry of the team to add another player this late?

Sounds like Stuelke is gone for good but it would be interesting how she would be utilized if she returned for a 5th year.

If Jan sticks with the plan to use the 4-guard/wing & 1-post style offense, Stuelke probably would be Heiden's backup in the 5 position. Hannah showed in her first 4 years she really can't hit the long shot and can't hit her free throws. She is however excellent at rebounding, passing, running the floor and making post moves and making layups, so I would expect her minutes would still be high. Still I doubt it would be enough for her to return if she actually had a choice.

Hannah has signed a professional contract in Italy. There is 0% chance of her returning. And with McCabe, she is attending Notre Dame in structural engineering so same with her.

Syd Affolter really got screwed in all this. Her career threaded the needle between the bonus years of Covid and the new ruling. Plus she's the kind of player who isn't going pro but would have cashed a very nice paycheck as a 5th year player. She would have been exactly what they needed either of the past two seasons, too. Tough, vocal leader, big time rebounder, could shoot the ball.
