3-3-5

Haven't seen any discussion on this. What did everyone think of Parker's latest tweak to scheme? I like it. It acknowledges we are weak at DT and that our DEs maybe are a bit oversized and not exactly speed rushers. Compress the DL and use outside LBs and quicker DEs to generate outside pash rush while still maintaining the same basic structure in the back 5.

It will be interesting to see which teams Parker uses this against. 3-3-5 schemes in general dont work as well against power rushing teams.

It might be more the way offenses are now with spreading the field. Ya really have to have 5 coverage guys most plays anymore, I think.

Saw way more pressure even when you wouldn’t call it a blitz. Opponent had something to do with it I’m curious to see what they do against ISU

I think KF said when asked this week that they had done it occasionally in previous years, and if I remember correctly he even acknowledged their lack of depth on the DLine, and said this was a way to deal with that while also taking advantage of a deep LB corps -- and altho he didn't say it, what a great way to get some of those young LBs experience by inserting them for a play here and there with very specific responsibilities.

If I was an Iowa fan, I wouldn't expect Iowa's D ends to really rush uphill right to Raynor this game. I expect Iowa's D ends to really solidy the edge to keep Raynor contained and within both ends in the pocket. Like they will play an area instead of flat out rushing the QB. I think Iowa has done this in the past with running QB's and quite effective. I think they did this with GT back in the day. I'm not expecting a lot of sacks but am expecting containment.

ISU used 7 guys on the line last week quite a bit. They may not run this D as much this week. Nice to have in your back pocket when needed and it might be our main defense most of the year.

The 3-3-5 has become increasingly popular the last 5-6 years. It plays into our strengths with the current roster make-up, especially when Tyler Brown returns from injury.

My guess is that Phil likes the idea of having two essentially CASH players on the field at the same time, which is more than doable given that we have a few players on the roster with really good size/speed ratios - Ries, Weisskopf, Mota, etc.

I doubt Phil would feel comfortable using them, but some of the young guys would fit into that scheme as well, such as Julian Manson and Darion Jones. Jones in particular stands out. He's a hell of an athlete but also mature and smart beyond his years. He no doubt will play at the next level, and hopefully we can work him into more and more playing time as the season progresses.

Yep. May even make sense to assign a 'spy' to him on passing downs -- he can probably do more damage consistently with his legs than his arm.

Well, I'm looking forward to seeing what these linebackers do against a P1/Rival Reload with our next great group and get to watch them for more than a year.

Play to your personnel. Get your best players on the field. Not quite as positionless as basketball, but there are similarities in that philosophy for each sport.
In addition, this is apparently one of Phil's fastest or quickest defenses. Having the quick LB's and at Cash is so beneficial to fly to the ball on a run or be able to stay with any receivers they cover. They sure looked quick to the ball against NIU.
