Doubly impressive when you consider KF has no clue what a blitz even is, let alone ever allowing one to occur in his entire tenure.

Not offended. Just find it ironic to take a shot at the Defensive scheme and KF when I feel you gotta give credit to his coaching staff for the ability to scout talent and develop it and the scheme has worked out pretty well for guys like Hodge, Angerer, Morris and Jewel.

Who cares if we don't blitz if the D is effective and I'd say over Kirk's tenure that it's been much more effective than not.

I have to agree. The whole concept that Ferentz teams never blitz is terribly out of date. Has everybody already forgotten the great success Iowa had with the Raider package in 2013?
 
To get back to Jewell, he might be the most instinctive linebacker I've ever seen. His importance to the team is ebeyond doubt. Just look at our game he was suspended. The guy is a stud. We did blitz some last year. I remember giving up some easy scores. That being said got a feeling we will be more aggressive this year. If only we get some early leads that would help.
 
I remember watching the Nebraska game last year with friends. Nebraska's first 7 drives resulted in 6 punts and a FG. Iowa had gotten off the field on 3rd down a bunch of times by playing coverage and rushing 3 or 4. Somewhere along the line Nebraska actually converted one of those 3rd downs, and out comes the cursing of Iowa's defense for never blitzing, exasperation and thrown up arms everywhere. No acknowledgement of all of the times Iowa had just been successful without blitzing. When Nebraska finally put together a TD drive, they had numerous 3rd down conversions against Iowa blitzes. Some of the room was still upset about the lack of blitzing because they think a blitz always results in a sack, so if there is no sack, they assume there was no blitz. The ones who actually know football well enough to recognize a blitz just complain about how lousy the Hawks one-on-one coverage was.

Never blitzes? That's not true. If they think they have an advantage, they do..or the situation is right. Just watch Jewell's highlight film...he's hitting QB's in the backfield. Certainly, the defensive scheme is getting there with four...but I think they blitz more than you believe they do. I remember a game against Nebraska in Lincoln where Morris and Kirsey were planting the Nebraska QB every other play. Parker has become more aggressive in 2nd and 3rd and long is my impression. Interesting take.

1) Yea the internet is terrific as an avenue for people to spout crap off to others in anonymity. You know, like crap one would ever say standing in front of the person. Just because the internet provides this doesn't mean some individuals have to exploit it and be asshats.

2) The LB position is not all about blitzing. Actually, that is probably a small part of the position. A terrific LB is one who can read and react quickly and cover when needed. I think the Iowa staff has done a good job of developing these guys the past several years. Some are saying Iowa's LB crew may be among the top in the BIG. Yea, Ferentz sucks!

Haha... jeeez, not only does Iowa blitz, but they turned 2 star Josey into an All American and likely a top 4 round NFL draft pick. KF should be getting kudos for Jewell, not ridicule.

It is in fact not true that Iowa never blitzes. It rarely happens in the preseason, but it does happen. As the season goes on, it happens more often. Maybe not as much as some would like, but it does happen.

So yes, it is like you are making it up.

I don't even know what an asshat is. I just like to say it. I'm not pointing you out or at least I didn't intend to. I was just merely pointing out that some easily state crap while hiding behind keyboards, but I realize that is always going to be the case with the internet and social sites.

Never thought I was or felt like any victim.

I just thought you had tunnel vision about the LB position and blitzing. I was just pointing out other attributes a good LB needs and that I think Iowa does a good job of developing those attributes in players. I'm with you, I'd luv to see more blitzing to get into the QB's head but I've come to realize that is not Ferentz's and Iowa's style. Sucks but is what it is. If I coached, I'd try to blitz most college QB's 20-25% of the time just to get into their head and speed them up to play faster than they want to and hopefully into a mistake.

But, every time you blitz, you are potentially giving the offense a fast-break opportunity.
