1st1 coach fired prediction

Nebbie in the 80s and 90s was like the movie The Program. The players were F'ing insane and protected by the coaches, media, and school; steroids were rampant and not just tolerated but given; character was optional; cash was king. Osborne was a good offensive coach, and I won't cut him down in that regard, but what he did best was build and preside over his protected empire focused solely on winning and absolutely nothing else. That all said, I will go to my grave saying the biggest advantage that Nebbie had back then was there conference. And Big 8 or Big 12, didn't matter because the Texas schools, even Texas itself, weren't shit in the 90s. Nebbie had a two-game season to win a nattie. Beat Oklahoma. Win the Orange Bowl. No one has that sort of path these days

1995 isn't coming back. Osborne built a hell of a program, but he built it in a different time in a place where he could get away with a lot of things. Nebbie fans won't admit it, but I have a long-time business aquaintance (good guy) from Lincoln who has said as much over dinner and beers. His buddies didn't disagree.

They have a loyal fan base, a big stadium and are in a great conference. They have the resources to be a winner. But the idea that Nebbie (or USC for example) is a sleeping giant that just needs a little nudge to be a fixture in the Top 10 again is no longer valid.
Good points. I think, USC has a fairly decent chance of being a top 10 team going forward, but they also are a bit of an unknown. They had the #1 recruiting class this past year, and have a lot of money. Full disclosure I hate USC and hope this doesn't happen.

I knew a guy who transferred from Nebby and was a starting D lineman for Iowa in the 1990s. He said steroids were very much part of the culture at Nebraska at the time. He had some interesting stories about it.

You know what I was pondering? Nebraska really needed a PJ Fleck. We all think of him as a cheerleader, but the guy has done a really solid job at Minnesota on playing physical and building the offensive and defensive lines. He's a very steady, solid coach who has now fielded a competitive team for a decade in the Big Ten.

Funny ironic thing I remember about those days was, when Osbourne got into politics he sat on the committee that was investing steroid use, He was a big player in the roid game. Always reminded me of the politician in the Godfather part 2...that dismissed himself from the investigation "had other important meetings to attend to "

I actually agree with this. I think that Nebbie thought that is what they were getting with Rhule. He was a bit of a cheerleader type and is more of a big picture culture type as opposed to a details and hands on coach like KF. The problem with Rhule is that he has not built and SUSTAINED a culture anywhere. He had a flash at Temple, moved to Baylor and had another flashed, then jumped to the NFL where he crashed and burned and now he is trying to build a culture at a place that desperately needs it, but he really hasn't proven he can do that. Back to Fry's point, I think Rhule has figured out that his Baylor fairy dust aint working in the corn fields and he is out of ideas.

He is "elite." In all seriousness, I agree with you. He understands his recruiting base and plays to his strengths. He's a good coach.

He has also developed NFL talent.

This thread has taken an infesting turn. Even though Ruhle is quoted at the beginning of the article, he isn't even listed as one of the coaches that could be first to be fired. The only one on the list that got any mention is Fickell at Wisky. I guess we have a B1G bias.

But it's clear, there is Husker hate here in HN and many would not be disappointed if Ruhle were the first to be fired, wishing nothing good for the Huskers.

All I can say is................go hawks

I don’t hate Fleck I just think he’s a cornball. I don’t think the guy cheats, I think he does things the right way, he’s just not a top caliber coach. As in if Fleck had his current staff (which he chooses) and had the exact same team as Ferentz for a five year period I don’t think he wins near as many games.

Fleck is a goof but he’s not really a hateable goof. The schtick where he sprints on the field every time there’s an injury is corny, but I think the guy is genuinely concerned for that player. That attitude rubs off on your team and staff.

But I don’t think he’s as smart as Ferentz or Pitzgerald or Lanning or Day or Cigaretti. His ceiling is innately lower and your attitude will only take you so far in P2 football. You have to have the machine that can win the race too.

If they fire Rhule, then what? Who do they get? They're just another P4 program now. Knowing you've got 3-4 years max will also scare away a lot of candidates.
OK, I'll do it. We ain't playing a team that doesn't have a direction in their school's name. Wait, they already do that and still suck.

Rhule is only in his fourth year. He's had them in a bowl the last two years after a 7 year drought. If they end up with a winning record he's not getting canned. If after 2027 he's still no better than 7-6, maybe.
They'll start 5-0 (Ohio, Bowling Green, North Dakota, MSU, Maryland), lose 6 of their next 7 (Indiana, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Rutgers, Ohio State, Iowa), finish 6-6 and the fans will flock to the Sony Walkman Bowl.

I think Fleck is basically like Lumberg from Office Space. Not in the way he talks or anything.
Or that he's clueless. I mean in the sense that he's the type that would put up a banner that reads "Ask yourself, is this good for the team?" and think to himself "that's gonna do it. We're gonna get 10 wins now if everybody just follows that."

I think he's trying to be like Ted Lasso, but really winds up being the living version of the poster of the cat trying to hang on to the tree limb that reads "Keep hanging in there."

Also, the quarterzips over a dress shirt and tie? He's a Temu Jeff Franklin.

This is gold.

You may not like his style but he has one of the highest graduation rates in college football and the best record of any Minnesota coach since 1950. He runs a good program.

Do you remember what brought Flack into the program? Remember players have sex orgies which included recruits? There was also the incident where the Iowa fan got toasted on wine in the pregame and was caught having sex in a stall in teh stadium with a Gopher fan she didn't even know. Then, thankfully the alumni base got up in arms asking if this is the kind of university the administration wanted to have? Fleck was brought in to put some respect back into Gopher athletics. He seems to have done a good job of it.

So, no, he's not on the who is going to get fired list!!
