1st1 coach fired prediction

I recant two posts above. I knew Rhule's buyout was big, but just googled it and its 63 million if they fire him during or after this season. Frost's was 15 million. I don't see Nebbie being able to raise that sort of money to buy out Rhule unless he just implodes. I mean, like 4 wins. If he is in or around .500, financially, they are pretty constrained to bring him back.

Did any of you guys watch rhule's season opener presser yesterday? It's on YouTube, I recommend it...

Here's why...

Usually those pressers are the most upbeat ones of the year. The media doesn't usually have tough questions and the coaches don't have to answer for any shortcomings yet.

In the presser yesterday it was 100% softball questions and reporters even tried to lightheartedly joke around, but rhule never even cracked a smile. He did the same stare at the floor, give short answers, don't turn your head towards the reporters side-eye thing he did after the last few years' late season meltdowns. Definitely way different than his opening pressers in prior years. Showed zero enthusiasm whatsoever.

Could it be he's already been told in private that his seat's on fire unless he makes a splash...and he realizes it's impossible because his team is the wet fart everyone outside nebraska knows it is? He's no Bear Bryant, but rhule has been around the sport long enough to know when a squad doesn't have the stones...
Oh he knows he is under heavy scrutiny, with a lot of untested players, and a daunting schedule. Maybe he is distraught, but more likely, he is trying to show he is serious about winning and doesn't see much to be light-hearted about given last season. He has some of the stink Frost had on him with being unorganized, changing coaches, not defining a culture, etc. At the end of the day, his body language might be interesting, but good/bad intentions or not, it all comes down to his record.

Rhule's buyout isn't a lump sum, it's a monthly payment continuation of his current pay. Also has a duty to mitigate so the amount reduces as soon as he gets hired somewhere. They don't have to come up with that much money.

At one point nebraska was paying Bo Pelini, Mike Riley, Scott Frost, Shawn Eichhorst, and Bill Moos all at the same time even though only two of them were employed there. 3 head coaches and 2 ADs all on the payroll at once. Never underestimate what these people will pay.

I think the massive problem for Nebraska is the lack of a consistent, stable culture. there is so much turnover of coaches and players. They keep trying to buy their way to a title. There is no toughness on that team.

Case in point: The star QB, who they were counting on, transfers out. Weird.

I know it worked at Indiana, but that will be the exception.

Michigan State will get better quickly because Fitzgerald knows what it takes.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Maybe he should blink twice if he's in danger!

Yeah, the big ten is going to be even more of a bear, I think. MSU definitely has potential, and I was reading that they had a cash infusion as well. They'll get better. USC... we'll see but they have lots of talent and money. Washington should be quite good this year. Even UCLA got what appears to be a very good coach. Things just keep getting more competitive, I think.

I hope Iowa can keep pace, and I have some hope that Lester is doing really good things. Nebby and Wisky couldn't have picked a worse time to suck.

nebraska should go back to the big 8.

If they fire Rhule, then what? Who do they get? They're just another P4 program now. Knowing you've got 3-4 years max will also scare away a lot of candidates.

Great point. Also, given Cignetti's effect, and the fact that teams like Nebby have real money, the expectations on the next coach will of course be high. But is that warranted these days at Nebraska?

Yep. There is recent precedence. Frost was fired midseason and if they had waited a few more weeks the buyout dropped precipitously, but they paid the larger buyout to fire midseason. The season was already lost, but they acted in face of a bad financial choice. Nebraska is one of the smaller B10 schools and doesn't have donors in the OSU, Michigan realm, but they have plenty of donor money to grab if they need it.

Any chance Warren Buffett would fund the buyout, it's be pocket change to him.

I think this sentiment and the buyout are the two things Rhule has going for him. Riley was just not up to the job. Frost was candidly a bit snake bit, but there were also a lot of rumors about his personal life and dedication to his craft. But, any candidate is still looking at a school that gives you 3 years to rebuild a non-existitant culture.

Rhule is overrated for sure, but he is a competent coach. So, let's say Nebbie goes 6-7. Do you fire him, pay 60 million to him to not work for you, and roll the dice on the next unknown variable? Or, do you double down on resources and see if Rhule can catch lightening in a bottle like he did at Temple and Baylor?

I agree with this. I think Nebraska thought he'd win big by year three and it just hasn't happened. But given the buyout amount and lack of viable candidates who could really turn it around, they are likely to have a little more patience. At this point I don't see Ruhle winning big either. He will be defined by mediocrity.

1995 isn't coming back. Osborne built a hell of a program, but he built it in a different time in a place where he could get away with a lot of things. Nebbie fans won't admit it, but I have a long-time business aquaintance (good guy) from Lincoln who has said as much over dinner and beers. His buddies didn't disagree.

They have a loyal fan base, a big stadium and are in a great conference. They have the resources to be a winner. But the idea that Nebbie (or USC for example) is a sleeping giant that just needs a little nudge to be a fixture in the Top 10 again is no longer valid.

Indiana has proved that in the modern era any team can be a sleeping giant and go from bad to great quickly. You don't have to be USC or Nebbie to be great, but it doesn't hurt to have money and history if you are looking for a turn-around.

Nebbie will have to decide if they want to keep swinging for the next Osborne so they fire Rhule if he goes .500 again, or maybe be patient and hope that Rhule can develop into a less douschy Pelini. That is his ceiling.

Yep, if you have money, facilities and a great coach it can be done. It's a little easier for a Nebraska or USC than a Vanderbilt or Indiana all things being equal. But the advantage is not what it used to be. A history of winning 30 years ago doesn't impress a recruit. What they've grown up seeing does...to some extent.

In the end it comes down to hiring a great CEO (head coach) and making sure he has the resources he needs.

I'll also double down on my previous comment. Nebbie (and some other schools) got away with a lot 25+ years ago that they can't today. You can't hide what happens, even in Lincoln Nebraska, on a Friday night.

I don't know about yesterday, but he's clearly trying a different public approach -- personality wise -- from the recent past. His first 3 years at NE he was very much a 'rah rah' guy, talking up his players, talking up his team, trying to get the fans -- and more importantly RECRUITS -- to believe the Huskers are a sleeping giant and any one of a number of top stars could be the catalyst. And he projected that personality across all platforms.

Then they brought in a 5-star QB, had one of the top NFL draft RBs at the same time -- and got very little to show for it. I suspect he's also watched KF closely. Kirk doesn't toot his own horn or that of his players. Just goes to work. After the embarrassment of turning his cap around to be cool, I think Rhule is throwing something else on the wall, trying to find anything that will work.

Good luck with that.
