I don't think he'll replace Kirk. He hasn't taken AL to the playoffs yet either. Regardless, we are working off Fry's scenario here.
Who you got for your mystery candidate that Beth would replace Kirk with without talking to any other candidates?

Not yet. They have good odds, most predictions are in the 60%s for them to get in. But they are hanging onto that final spot, need a couple teams to avoid pulling upsets, and can't get smoked on Saturday.
Fry's speculation has been all the rage around here over the past week. That's what the DeBoer fun talk is based on.

I'd be surprised if they aren't in. The SEC will get 5 and the committee won't penalize Bama for losing the title game (or so they've said in the past). Still think it's strange that they're the 5th highest SEC team yet in the title game. Okie, Ole' Miss and A&M all sidestep the chance for another loss.
BYU upsets TTech they could jump Bama.
Tulane over a number of the teams above them is a joke. They were blown out (not just beaten) by Texas-San Antonio.
Bottom line: Even if Bama is squeezed out, that's 2 years in a row they were on the cusp so his program is looking good. Leaving for Iowa seems like a step down. Whether or not he likes Alabama, I don't know. But why would you take the job if you weren't willing to live there?
As for Fry's specualtion, the only name I've heard tossed around here that seems to make sense and is realistic would be Matt Entz.
It was never going to be Fitz or either Stoops.

If they win their conference they should be in, those are the rules. If not then you just have a dumb committee deciding who that next team in is.

Sounds like BYU's coach is now being rumored to Penn State. Interesting. Lane is taking his lumps in social media. But didn't Tulane's coach basically do the same thing? Shockingly Kirby Smart came to Kiffin's defense saying he was in a tough spot.
In some ways, it's hypocritical to hold coaches at a different standard than athletes. Athletes play "let's make a deal" from year to year for more money. Why not coaches?

Those are the (current) rules. But they are clearly not one of the best 12 teams in the country.

The playoff needs to expand by 4 teams and eliminate the bye week. While nice it’s also kind of a bad deal for those teams. For example Boise State last year gets a bye and then their next game is at a neutral site. So they miss out on having a home game. Not sure what capacity is of Boise but you take for instance a high profile game at Michigan with high capacity. I saw it reported that the game last weekend against OSU they were expecting $1M + in concessions alone. Factor in tickets, merch, tailgating, local business revenue, it is a big missed opportunity

Still better to have a clear, defined path. If you’re a bubble team who’s better than a Tulane and mad about not being in the playoff, win your conference.

I get your point but winning an 18 team deep B1G or SEC isn't that easy. 2nd-4th place teams in those conferences would win most others. Bump it to 16, leaving room for a few more at-large teams. I think that'll happen soon.

In my opinion they should do 16 teams but make it the top 4 in each conference. That way there's clear defined criteria and no team could ever bitch about it. Let the Boise States and Tulanes of the world eat cake.

No way. You are giving the Little 12 and the ACC equal access to the playoffs? That would get laughed out of the room if proposed. Hell, even the ACC commissioner would chuckle at that suggestion.
Honestly, I'd like to see the Big 10 and SEC go to 20 teams each. Each conference has a 6 team playoff and the two conference champs play in the college version of the Super Bowl.
The rest of D1 can play for their own Nattie using the current playoff format. They can pool together as a group and negotiate TV and split the revenue. There is still a really good football product to be sold outside the Top 40 teams. Having 110 teams in football is not manageable, and there is too great a divide between the Haves and the Have Nots. Break it up and play good on good.

Hell yes. Watching Arizona State get pummeled by OSU 76-3 and Cincinnati get beat by Georgia 93-10 is TV I'd watch.
